A joint report from The Verifier and the iUpdate YouTube channel reveals some of the new features said to arrive with the next generation Apple Watch. The report indicates a significant new feature: the Touch ID sensor in the Apple Watch. According to these rumors, Apple is currently working on two different approaches to add unlocking with a fingerprint. At the moment, the Apple Watch does not offer biometric authentication options, users must enter a PIN code the first time they put the watch on their wrist.
Touch ID sensor in the Apple Watch
Apple would be sifting two different solutions to add the Touch ID sensor to the Apple Watch. The first solution would be through the integration of a fingerprint sensor in the crown. The other method, however, would be to add a sensor under the screen. However, both solutions face difficulties. Especially the first option seems difficult to apply since at this moment the crown is used to enable the electrocardiogram function. Since when'ECG was added to the Apple Watch Series 4, the crown of the crown covered by a titanium electrode. We can't know how Apple can add a fingerprint sensor there too. For this reason, it seems that this functionality will not be ready for this year, but also according to The Verifier the his arrival in 2021.
Rumors claim that Apple is considering resuming a presence fingerprint sensor also on the screen iPhone as an alternative to unlocking with Face ID. However, we currently don't expect to see Touch ID on any of the iPhone 12 models. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says for, that the fingerprint sensor digital devices may be on the power button of future low-end iPhones. This solution would allow the company to offer a full screen device without incorporating the expensive TrueDepth camera system.
In addition to Touch ID, the report confirms the presence of the oxygen sensor in the blood and the sleep monitoring feature coming to Apple Watch with watchOS 7. We expect Apple to officially introduce watchOS 7 to the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) to be held in June 2020. As previously announced by Apple, the WWDC 2020 will have a new one online format this year, with a keynote and sessions that will connect millions of developers around the world.
