SIMFI, the SIM with built-in WiFi – Macitynet.it
The specialists in smartcards from Sagem Orga (Safran group) and Telefonica (one of the largest telephone companies in the world) in the context of the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, launch “SIMFI” the first SIM card with integrated WiFi. The system allows you to use your SIM as a hotspot by authenticating users on High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) networks. At the moment some limitations concerning the 3G modem settings and the necessary drivers are limiting its diffusion, but the system can potentially be used with USB modems, PCMCIA modems, cell phones and various other devices and software. The accessory incorporates a modem and activates the WLAN tethering features thanks to an applet on the SIM with which it should be possible to navigate the surrounding devices and connect the hosts to the network.
Having an adequate data plan, it is possible to retransmit the WiFi signal to the neighboring terminals (without each one using different connections), allowing to substantially transform any phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot accessible from notebooks and portable devices simply by authenticating. The dimensions are: 25 x 15 x 0.76 mm and therefore the support of hardware manufacturers and software developers is required.
