iPhone, the permanently registered trademark – Macitynet.it
Apple has finally obtained, even formally, the definitive registration of the iPhone name. To signal the event PatentlyApple.com, a site specializing in the sector of registered trademarks and patents relating to the world of Apple.
The iPhone brand, MacGeneration notes, was registered on 9 February in classes 9, 28 and 38 and for the first time the name is associated with the Apple brand in an official document of the USPTO (United States Patent Trademark Office. In practical terms this means the conclusion of a long process started with the presentation of the product with a name (iPhone) which was owned by Cisco from which Cupertino then obtained the right of use. At a later stage (August 2009) the iPhone name had been registered in class 38, that of telecommunications, and then in January of this year in class 9 (the one with the largest application that also includes computers and IT devices). Class 28, the novelty that came together with the combination with the logo Apple, the category of games, an industry where iPhone is taking a relevant role.
After the iPhone trademark registration process, Apple is now on a new path to iPad. The road could be just as long and perhaps even more difficult. Currently the iPad name disputed to Apple by Fujitsu; in Europe STMicroelectronics would have registered the iPad name to make use of it in the component sector even if it is not clear if the Italian-French multinational company intends to claim the right to use as Fujitsu has already done.
