Surprise. The new iPad Pro with LiDAR scanner includes a microphone lock mechanism when iPad is not in use.
Among the many innovations introduced with the new iPad Pro LiDAR, there is one that we did not expect. As on laptops, a physical mechanism has now been implemented disconnection of microphones.
MacBook Air or iPad Pro LidAR: Which to choose?
New MacBook Air or iPad Pro with LiDAR scanner? If you were unsure which to buy, here is a comparison to help you make this important decision.
This is a security feature introduced last year in the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, those equipped with the T2 security chip; among the functions guaranteed by the latter there is one that disable microphones when the screen closed, and the same thing was introduced also on iPad Pro.
Apple reveals it in a recent support document, which we translate for your convenience:
Starting in 2020, iPads also have a feature that physically disconnects the microphone hardware. When an MFI-certified case (including those sold by Apple) is attached to the iPad and closed, the microphone is disconnected via hardware, which prevents the microphone's audio from being made available to any software, even with root or kernel privileges in iPadOS , or if the firmware is compromised.
In other words, even if someone somehow managed to gain control of your device with the most sophisticated software manipulation techniques currently available, he couldn't secretly listen to you.
We can only think of one possible counterpart: under these conditions, of course, Siri will not be able to function. To activate "Hey Siri" you must first remove the tablet.
