This has not happened for years: the growth in downloads and spending of iPad apps in the first quarter of 2020 even exceeds the growth rates recorded by those for iPhones. The new records for Apple tablets are unfortunately associated with the blockages and restriction measures adopted in various countries around the world for Coronavirus.
The maximum values recorded also mark a strong increase: the count of the first iPad app downloads in the first quarter of 2020 reaches 1.1 billion worldwide. This figure represents a 40% growth compared to the first quarter of 2019 and the first year-on-year growth since the fourth quarter of 2013.
Record also for user spending in iPad apps: again in the first quarter of 2020 the estimated global total of 2.1 billion dollars, never so high since the tablet exists. The last historical ceiling dates back to the first quarter of 2014 when for the first time the total expenditure had exceeded one billion dollars.
As for downloads, the vast majority of apps fall into the Games and Entertainment category, followed in second place by the Education category, which for the first time reaches the threshold of 105 million downloads worldwide. The last record quarter for Education apps for iPad dates back to the first quarter of 2013 when it totaled 91 million.
The impact of Coronavirus is also evident from the percentages compared with the previous quarters, as SensorTower notes. The total of 105 million iPad app downloads in the first quarter of 2020 in the Education category was 114% higher than the 49 million in the fourth quarter of 2019 and 78% higher than in the first quarter of 2019.
Games also dominate user spending: about 76% of the total spending of $ 2.1 billion, so about $ 1.6 billion was spent on games. In comparison, the growth in App downloads for iPhone in the same period was 24%.
