Before starting to connect the PS4 to any monitor
Before doing anything, it is important to familiarize yourself with the connections on your PS4 and computer monitor. Take note of the type of connection that the PS4 uses, as well as the connections available on the computer monitor. As for video and audio connections, the PS4 has an HDMI port it's a optical audio port. The HDMI cable can carry both video and audio signal. Most computer monitors are not equipped with speakers. This means that if you want to listen to the audio from the console, you will need an external audio source. In this case you need more than just an HDMI cable. We will get to this in more detail later.
Moreover, many of the cheapest computer monitors do not have an HDMI port, but only the attack DVI or VGA. This is important to note, because you need an adapter to turn the PS4's HDMI port into one of the monitor's other video ports.

The best case scenario is if the computer monitor has an HDMI port and built-in speakers. If so, all you need is a HDMI cable. Just insert one end of the cable into yours PS4 and the other end in the computer monitor, and done.
The computer monitor may be able to reproduce the sound of the computer PS4 through its built-in speakers using only the cable HDMI, but not always possible with some brands of monitors.
How to connect PS4 to monitors without HDMI
If the monitor does not have an HDMI port but rather of a connection DVI or VGA, then you need an HDMI-DVI adapter cable. If the monitor has only one port VGA, means that it is probably very old and you will notice a significant degradation of the image quality. In some cases the connection may not even work, as in most cases the PS4 frequency is not supported by the monitor.
Since newer monitors can be found at a good price, we recommend buying one that has a more modern type of connection. The audio connection is a bit more complicated than the video one when you need to connect the PS4 to a computer monitor. There PS4 only supports one exit optical / digital audio. However, there are some ways to handle the situation. Most of them require a converter for convert optical / digital audio into a speaker connection.
If your monitor does not have built-in speakers, you will need an external audio source. It can be a normal pair of computer speakers or a stereo system. You can connect the PS4 audio directly to these speakers.
However, considering that there are different ways to connect the audio to the speakers based on the type of speakers available, we propose the most common situations and the type of equipment needed for each of them.
If the speakers are connected using a 3.5mm headphone jack, then you will need this equipment:
- TOSLINK optical digital audio cable,
- digital-to-RCA digital converter
- adapter cable RCA-to-3.5 mm.
Once you have these tools available, connect one end of the cable TOSLINK in the optical audio port of the PS4 and the other end to the digital converter. Next, connect the white and red ends of the cable RCA adapter in the converter. Finally insert the 3.5mm male connector into your speakers.
If external speakers are connected with a white and red RCA input jack, you need to:
- TOSLINK audio optical digital cable (previous link),
- digital-to-RCA digital converter (previous link),
- RCA cable.
Connect the cables as shown above. You will need to connect the white and red cables to the sound system to get the sound from the PS4.
If you want to use headphones, you don't need a converter and you can simply plug the headphone jack directly onto the DualShock 4 Controller of the PS4. In this case we recommend to manage the headphones by pressing the button PS of the controller.
important to note that if you are playing using the PS4 audio obtained through the digital optical output, you need to change the PS4 audio settings in the menu Settings. From l, select Audio settings and then in the audio output settings select the type of audio connection (optical digital audio).
However, a simpler way to change this setting is to select Multi-output audio in the menu Audio settings, which will send audio for all connections, regardless of the type of connection.
