As we approach the end of 2017, the trend of smartphone without bezel is already conquering the world. The flagship devices of well-known mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung, LG and Apple have adopted a larger screen with minimal bezels. And if the big boys are doing it, then there is a Chinese giant who is proud to start this avalanche effect. Yes, Xiaomi and the Mi Mix was one of the first frameless phones that were launched on the market in 2016.
Now, the Chinese giant is back with the subsequent iteration of its conceptual device. Mi Mix 2 simplifies the frameless vision of Xiaomi and is based on the annoying defects of the original Mix. The Mi Mix was a conceptual device and did not come out of China, but Xiaomi has already launched the new Mi Mix 2 also in India. So, just compare the two devices to better understand how Mi Mix 2 differs from the original. Let's take a look:
One of the biggest differences between the two Mi Mix devices is the display, which is the first thing you notice when you take the device out of the box. And I stayed mesmerized by the beauty of the Mi Mix 2, to put it mildly, while I was joining the same.
While both Mi Mix devices sport a display Full HD LCD + IPS, Xiaomi has now replaced the monstrous 6.4 inch screen of the original Mix with one 5.99-inch screen smaller on the Mi Mix 2 . This allows Mi Mix 2 to boast a pixel density greater than 403 ppi, providing a clear viewing experience. The smaller screen has a aspect ratio 18: 9 compared to the 17: 9 aspect ratio odd than the original.
During the time spent with both of these devices, I realized that Mi Mix was incredibly large and saw me use both hands to navigate the display. I'm not the biggest fan of the phablet smartphone category and Xiaomi has diluted my fears by including the smaller display in a more elegant design than the Mi Mix 2. Although we have lost some screen-body relationship with this change, I am disdainful with the small screen for a more comfortable and elegant experience.
In addition to the display, the overall build quality of the Mi Mix 2 a welcome change that you will observe on this device. The original Mi Mix was a huge and chunky device, which seemed like a thankless task to manage and transport. But the Mi Mix 2 simply fabulous.
Mi Mix 2 let the block-ish design is adopt curves to make it easier to grip and navigate the device with one hand. Instead of using durable ceramic all around, the Mi Mix 2 now adds a metal frame around the body to give the device greater rigidity and makes me a little peace since the phone no longer slips into my hands. The smooth ceramic finish, although premium to the touch, forced us to put a back cover (included in the package, thanks Xiaomi) on the Mi Mix to prevent it from being slippery.
On the front of the Mi Mix 2, you will notice that the upper bezel increased and because the innovative and sinuous ear in piezoelectric ceramic included in the now-missing design device. The Chinese giant is now using a traditional headset with a brand new guided design, which should solve all the audio problems I had to deal with with the piezoelectric one. As Rupesh mentions in his video review of the Mi Mix 2, the headset on the first Mix caused him immense day-to-day problems.
As for the lower chin of the Mi Mix 2, it has been restricted due to the improvements in LCD chip technology and camera + antenna design. Not so, I have not accepted Xiaomi's decision to improve the camera design and still include it below. We will talk about how I despise the unchanged position of the selfie camera below.
The altered design of the Mi Mix 2 was made possible thanks to the smaller 18: 9 screen, together with the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack and of smaller battery of 3, 400 mAh . While I understand why Xiaomi went ahead with the first decision, I would still have liked to see the headphone jack on the device. We didn't go far to eliminate the 3.5mm jack and bring a key to listen to the tiring music. The smaller battery shouldn't be a controversial topic since Xiaomi had to build a thinner device than the Mi Mix. And from the moment I spent with Mi Mix 2, the battery life pretty good.
It all adds up to the fact that the Mi Mix 2 feels more precious in hand ed more comfortable to use, thanks to the new narrower design than its predecessor. It makes Mi Mix 2 suitable for everyday use by the average consumer and I am quite confident that I am one of them.
Since Mi Mix 2 is now the flagship device of the Xiaomi smartphone line, it is assembling the interiors to adapt them in the same way. The Snapdragon 835 chipset top of the range coupled with 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM the perfect recipe for a stormy user experience in 2017. You can choose from several internal storage options in China, but the Indian variant of Mi Mix 2 comes with 128 GB of onboard storage space.
Its predecessor, although a conceptual device, was also loaded with flagship specifications to make it an attractive offering. It included the Snapdragon 821 chipset which can be paired with two memory + RAM options: da 128 GB and 4 GB or 256 GB or 6 GB . It has integrated the Adreno 530 GPU, which has now updated it to Adreno 540 on Mi Mix 2 to further improve graphics performance.
In my time spent with both Mi Mix devices, I tried to push them to the limit by opening several apps, continually switching between them and playing heavy games. But both devices, which running the beta version of MIUI 9, they were quick and ready to respond. The older 821 chipset did not lag behind the 835. This is also the right time to say that the fingerprinting on the Mi Mix 2 crazy fast . one of the fastest I've seen on the latest flagship smartphones.
It seems that Xiaomi has further optimized MIUI for speed and functionality, making it one of the most powerful custom Android ROMs available for users. I have been using MIUI for a couple of years and even I have been struck by the snappy operability. MIUI definitely one of the best Android variants currently on the market. In this ninth edition of MIUI, Xiaomi has even included one Smart Assistant to keep under control important aspects and a function of smart app launch which scans the screen to suggest apps that may need to be opened. There are even a handful of experimental features with MIUI Labs, but the lack of an appropriate explanation has made adoption difficult. It could be improved in the official MIUI 9 version.
Prepare for some big disappointment . The Mi Mix 2 does not include a dual camera configuration which is becoming increasingly common in high-end smartphones. Instead, it settles for a 12 megapixel IMX386 sensor with f / 2.0 aperture, which a downgrade from 16 megapixel sensor of the original Mi Mix on paper.
But, a practice with the two devices reassured me that the Mi Mix 2 camera produces much better images than the original one. This is due to two very important changes, which have proven to be an advantage for the lower megapixel rear camera. One the biggest 1, 25 m pixels (compared to the 1 m pixel size of the Mi Mix) which allows a device to capture more light and detail. And Mi Mix 2 also adds 4-axis optical image stabilization, an upgrade over the EIS that Mi Mix has relied on to stabilize the hits.
I even noticed a huge difference in the image outputs of the two cameras. When you enlarge the images taken on the two smartphones, the image on the original Mix tends to stretch and appears pixelated due to its odd proportions. This problem has been resolved with Mix 2, which produces sharper and clearer photos at least during the day. The images are devoid of detail, as is the sharpness in low light conditions, making the camera a decent shooter in its price segment.
Turning to the front camera, this is an even bigger disappointment. always the same 5 megapixel sensor awkwardly positioned in the lower corner of the device. This design choice is quite questionable given that Xiaomi should have included the camera in the upper frame. But simple to understand their point of view behind this decision. Xiaomi had already shown its Mi Mix phone concept, almost without a frame, and the same had no faceplate. He has already made room for the headset but was not in the mood to compromise the appearance of the device to become another Galaxy S8 clone.
But I find that it is a lack of better judgment on the part of the Chinese giant, which could have improved the design to incorporate the top front camera. Sometimes frustrating to use the front camera when asked to turn the device upside down to access it. In terms of quality, I found that the contrast of truly standard captured images and that the colors do not burst as they should. an average front camera, in my opinion.
Both camera modules of the Mi Mix 2 carry on one of the main disadvantages of the original concept, making it lose points compared to its mid-range competitors. I can still live with the placement of the front camera and rely on the rear camera for most shooting purposes, since I'm not a person with a persistent selfie.
Although Xiaomi has sacrificed the largest 4,400 mAh battery in the Mix concept to make its successor more compact and user-friendly, the pack 3,400 mAh batteries of the Mi Mix 2 can still survive for a full day on a single charge. I know it's hard to turn a blind eye to the 1000 mAh difference between the two devices, but one really should, as it doesn't matter anymore.
Whether it's the rigged Snapdragon 835 chipset or the optimizations introduced with MIUI 9, it's definitely doing wonders for Mi Mix 2. I was able to easily use my Mi Mix 2 every day without having to recharge in the middle of the day, as we can expect. The smaller Mi Mix 2 battery lasts for a full day on a single charge, which impressive compared to the original Mi Mix . The original device had no optimization and even lost its charge in standby mode.
In addition, both Mi Mix devices have integrated the USB Type-C connector for charging and data transfer. been completed with QuickCharge 3.0 technology, which allows you to charge Mi Mix 2 from 0 to 90 percent in an hour and a half. It is possible to further optimize the use of the battery with the software tools integrated in MIUI.

Mi Mix 2: a refined experience
With the feedback collected last year, Xiaomi went from staging a frameless concept device to the release of a refined flagship experience with Mi Mix 2. The original Mi Mix is not a terrible phone, in itself, but it certainly has its peculiarities that could become frustrating over time. They are the huge display, the rear and front camera not exceptional and the speaker module.
However, the original Mi Mix has shown the Chinese smartphone giant's hunger for innovation, which according to some has been set aside for the release of a better device for mass production intended for consumers in the form of Mi Mix 2. And this true from the Mi Mix, although ahead of its time, it needed some work to make the device comfortable to use for everyone.
Mi Mix 2 Daily Driver Material?
It can be said that the original Mi Mix has now evolved into a superior piece of technology, with fewer dazzling defects, relying on the flagship label that it carries with pride. All this accompanied by a price of 35,999, which makes it an interesting purchase – if you can look past the lack of dual cameras.
Mi Mix 2 is not the carbon copy of the Mi Mix concept device. Instead, a more refined and accessible variant of the same, which can be used as an everyday driver. What are your thoughts on Mi Mix 2? Tell us in the comments below.
