The coronavirus alarm requires special action: a few days after the start of the spread of the Chinese virus that worries the world, the scarcity of masks and medical suits has emerged: now the large production companies operating in China, including Foxconn, announce that they will start building medical masks and suits to deal with the health emergency.
Foxconn the trademark of Hon Hai Precision Industry, Apple's historic and most important partner for years: the giant of contract manufacturers has announced that it has started the production of trial of surgical masks at the Loghua Park plant in Shenzhen. Foxconn's goal to build coronavirus masks with a volume of 2 million units per day, which will be reached by the end of February.
Foxconn also specified that coronavirus masks will initially be intended for internal use for its hundreds of thousands of employees, most of whom work in mega factory cities in China. Similar operations have also been announced by other large companies operating in China in other sectors. SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, a joint venture between General Motors and two Chinese companies, will modify 14 production lines to build 1.7 million masks per day.
The textile industry HongDou Group has dedicated one of its factories to the production of disposable medical suits, as well as the Zhejiang Giuseppe Garment company. According to a Czech mask manufacturer reported by Reuters, orders increased by 57,000% in the last 4 days of January only.
The Chinese government has ordered most production and commercial activities to be stopped until February 9: unless new decrees are expected, the multinationals, including Apple and Foxconn, will resume operations on February 10. In the meantime, the forced stop and the problems generated by coronavirus are causing a shortage of stocks and production delays for some of the most popular Apple products on the market, especially AirPods. Problems and delays that could also extend to the new devices expected to arrive, including the inexpensive iPhone SE 2 or iPhone 9 terminal expected in March.
