force reboot of iPad Pro

Apple's iPad Pro known for its highly reliable hardware and software. But if you install iPadOS or buggy app beta updates on it, you may experience problems like app crashes or even complete system crashes, making the use of buttons and the touchscreen useless. Because iPad Pro doesn't have a Home button, thanks to Face ID, it's a bit complicated to restart the device. In such cases, follow the steps below to forcefully reboot iPad Pro and restore it to operating conditions.

Although Face ID has made it convenient to use an iPad Pro (models 2018 and later), it can be a hassle when you need to perform certain operations. If an application crashes and the screen does not respond, there is no physical button that will take you back to the home screen and exit this annoying situation. Fortunately, Apple has incorporated a mechanism that can be used to force an iPad Pro to restart.

This iPad Pro forced reboot method applies to both of the latest iPad Pro models with Face ID, including 11 ″ and 12.9 ″ screen sizes, where the Home button is not present.

Follow the steps below to do it:

  • Press the volume + button and release it.
  • Press the volume button – and release it.
  • Press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo on a black background. We will confirm the restart of the iPad Pro.

Suggestion: when the iPad Pro is locked, you can always try to hold down the power button to try turning it off and then scroll up to see if the freezing problem is resolved. If the problem persists, the only option is forced restart.

Restart iPad locked with the Home button

If you use an iPad with the physical Home button, you won't be able to use the previous method, but you need to follow the steps below to force the reboot:

  • Simultaneously hold down the power button and the Home button until the Apple logo appears.

Apple has provided an option to turn off the iPad Pro that is accessible by going up Settings> General> Switch off. Hopefully they will also provide a software-based option to restart. However, if the device is blocked, this option will also become useless, so the previous steps will also be useful in that circumstance.
