Point-to-point and Multipoint are two types of line configuration. Both describe a method for connecting two or more communication devices in a link. The main difference between the point-to-point and multipoint connection is that in a point-to-point connection the connection only between two devices, for example a sender and a receiver. Definition of the Point-to-Point connection
Point-to-point is a type of line configuration that describes the method for connecting two communication devices in a link. The point-to-point connection is a unicast connection. There is a dedicated link between a single sender and receiver pair. The entire channel capacity reserved only for the transmission of the packet between the sender and the recipient.
If the network consists of point-to-point connections, the packet will have to travel through many intermediate devices. The connection between multiple intermediate devices can be of different length. So in the point-to-point network find the smallest distance to reach the receiver the most important thing.
Definition of multipoint connection
The multipoint connection is a connection established between more than two devices. The multipoint connection also called multidrop line configuration. In the multipoint connection, a single link shared by multiple devices. So, we can say that the channel capacity is shared temporarily by each device that connects to the link. If the devices use the connection shift after shift, it is said to be the configuration of the shared line over time.
In the figure above, you can see that the five workstations share the common link between the main frame and the workstations. Multipoint networks are also called "transmission network". In a transmission network, the packet transmitted by the sender is received and processed by each device on the link. But, from the address field in the packet, the receiver determines whether the packet belongs or not, otherwise, discards the packet. If the packet belongs to the receiver, it keeps the packet and responds accordingly to the sender.

- When there is only one dedicated link between two devices, a point-to-point connection while, if a single link shared by more than two devices, it is said to be a multipoint connection.
- In multipoint connection, the channel capacity is temporarily shared by the connected devices. On the other hand, in a point-to-point connection, the entire channel capacity reserved only for the two devices in the connection.
- In the point-to-point connection, there can be only one transmitter and a single receiver. On the other hand, in the multipoint connection, there is a single transmitter and there may be multiple receivers.
Both point-to-point and multipoint are the types of line configuration, which refers to the technique for connecting two or more communication devices.
If you want to send data to multiple recipients, using the point-to-point connection will create more overload, while the multipoint connection will be more useful.
