CareKit, the opensource framework for developing health apps
Apple also introduced CareKit, a new software framework designed to help health app developers for example by monitoring symptoms and treatments, providing a more complete picture of health conditions.
"We are thrilled with the profound impact that ResearchKit has already had on the pace and scope of medical research, and we realized that many of those same principles could be applied to individual care," said Jeff Williams, Apple's Chief Operating Officer. We believe that providing people with the tools to understand what is happening with their health is incredibly important, and the apps designed with CareKit make it possible, giving users the opportunity to play a more active role in managing their care.
CareKit will be available as an open source framework next month and will allow the developer community to continue to design on the first four Apple-designed modules that include: Care Card, which helps people keep track of their support plans and required actions, for example taking a drug or completing specific exercises; the activities can be monitored and recorded automatically thanks to the Apple Watch or iPhone, Symptom and Measurement Tracker, which allows users to easily record their symptoms and indicate how they feel, for example by monitoring the body temperature to check for any symptoms infections or by measuring levels of pain or exhaustion. Updates can include simple surveys, photos showing progress of an injury or activities calculated using the accelerometer and the gyroscope of the iPhone, such as quantifying the range of movement, Insight Dashboard, which maps the symptoms to the actions required in the Care Card, to show clearly the effectiveness of the therapies; Connect, which allows users to easily share information and communicate to doctors, care teams or family information about their health and changes in their condition.
