Long battery life, high definition video, chat, high performance processor and an entirely new design. Here are some of the new features of the iPhone 4 (official name) that Apple presented this morning, Pacific time, at the opening of WWDC, the great event for developers that will last all week.
The main novelty of the FaceTime phone, a video call software that operates using the dual camera, one of which is a front. FaceTime – says Apple – follows you like your phone. Using FaceTime as easy as making a voice call, without the need for configuration, and you can switch to the rear view camera to show others what you are observing with a single touch. For now, Jobs explained, FaceTime works only via Wifi but in the future thanks to the support of the carriers it should also arrive on the 3G network.
The second major novelty of the iPhone 4 is the Apple Retina screen, the highest resolution display ever inserted into a phone, which makes – says Apple – incredibly sharp images, text and videos. According to Cupertino, the density (326 pixels per inch at 960-by-640-pixels) of four times that of the old iPhone and the pixels are about 70% of those of the iPad which, however, has a display of almost 10 inches against 3.5 iPhone The secret is the 78 micrometer pixels invisible to the naked eye from a normal distance; the contrast ratio increases four times and also improves the resistance of glass made with the same technology used for helicopter and train crystals.
iPhone 4 is characterized by a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, the ability to record HD video with resolution up to 720p in H.264 at 30 frames per second. To take advantage of this iPhone functionality, there will also be an iPhone version of iMovie that will be sold on the App Store for 3.99 euros.
Battery life significantly increases. Apple talks about seven hours of 3G talk time (14 in 2G), 300 hours of standby time, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wifi, 10 hours of video playback and 40 hours of audio. The merit, as well as the larger battery, of the A4 processor that optimizes consumption by increasing performance.
On iPhone 4 we also find a three-axis gyroscope which, combined with the accelerometer, provides sensitivity on 6 axes such as the above and below, from side to side, forward and backward, pitch and roll, making the device very suitable for the development of original games. Developers will be able to access the gyroscope using the new CoreMotion API to make games – says Apple – and the other apps better than other mobile devices offer. Among the noteworthy elements a second microphone that supports software for the removal of background noise and the 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity. Nothing new, however, for wireless cellular phones: the phone is a quad-band HSUPA with download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and 5.8Mbps for uploading.
Numerous novelties in design and materials. iPhone 4 is the thinnest, Apple says, smartphone ever: 9.3mm. The front and back are made of aluminosilicate glass, chemically reinforced to be 30 times harder than plastic, more scratch-resistant and more durable than ever. The rear and front windows have an oleophobic coating which facilitates cleaning. To enclose iPhone 4 on the sides there is a band of stainless steel, in a special alloy that has been forged to be 5 times stronger than standard steel. This band also designed to act as an antenna to the various wireless protocols supported by the iPhone. Speaking of design, Jobs compared the phone to old Leica cameras
IOS 4 runs on iPhone 4 (new name of iPhone Os), the new and not yet released version of the mobile operating system used by Apple. During the keynote he talked about 100 new features and 1500 new APIs for developers. iOS 4 stands out for Multitasking, thanks to which users can now instantly go through each of their apps while preserving battery life, Folders (to organize apps into collections by automatically creating a folder with the name based on the category of the selected apps), possibility to customize the Home and Lock screens. There will also be an improved Mail (with unified mailboxes), more accurate Enterprise support and the new Apple iAd mobile advertising platform.
The new iBooks app (already seen on iPhone) will be available for iPhone 4 as a free download from the App Store and will include Apple's new iBookstore. The iBooks app will store and synchronize your current location and any other bookmarks, underlines or notes you have created, in all copies of the same book on iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. IBooks users will be able to read and store PDFs directly in iBooks.
