ATEM Mini Pro Blackmagic Dessign's new live production switcher, a product that boasts the same performance as ATEM Mini and additional features for recording, streaming and monitoring.
ATEM Mini Pro boasts a not excessively high cost ($ 595 in the USA) and provides a streaming hardware engine that allows you to immediately stream on YouTube Live, Facebook and Twitch via the ethernet connection. You can record streaming in H.264 directly to USB flash drives, even without interruption if you connect multiple drives. The HDMI video output supports the multiview function, to monitor all inputs on a single screen, together with the status information of the recording, streaming and audio mixer.
The manufacturer explains that the ATEM Mini switchers "are the perfect solution to create professional multi-camera productions for live streaming on YouTube, and corporate presentations on Skype or Zoom". Just connect them to 4 professional cameras to switch quality images live, to a computer for PowerPoint presentations, or even to game consoles. The internal DVE offers creative picture-in-picture options, a function that can be used for real-time comments, and many video effects. All ATEM Mini models have a USB port that works like a webcam, and with any streaming software. In addition, ATEM Mini Pro allows you to immediately go live streaming and record on USB drives.
Among the peculiarities to report, also an HDMI video output to connect the projectors, and inputs for table and lapel microphones for interviews and presentations. Comfortable buttons for audio mixing; in addition, the ATEM Mini Pro includes buttons to record and manage streaming, and to switch cameras, programs and multiviews on the video. On the back we find the HDMI connections for the rooms and the computers, the inputs for microphones, a USB webcam output and an Aux style HDMI output for the program video.
The easy-to-use switcher: just press the numbered buttons 1 – 4 on the front panel to switch between video sources. The Cut button activates transitions with a clean cut, while Auto changes the source with a video effect, including fading, passing with color and DVE with squeeze and push effects. The ideal DVE for picture-in-picture, to be placed in a position of your choice on the screen. An archive for titles and graphics is also available, accessible from the control software.
As many high-quality cameras can be connected to the four independent HDMI inputs. Sources that have video standards other than that of the switcher synchronize, thus allowing you to connect any video device.
ATEM Mini ($ 295 in the US) offers a USB connection that is detected as a webcam, and therefore usable with any video software. In fact, the software reads ATEM Mini like a webcam, despite being an authentic live production switcher. You can work with the quality of 1080HD at full resolution and with the software of your choice. The device is also compatible with software and platforms such as Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster, YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Skype, Zoom, Twitch, Periscope, Livestream and Wirecast.
ATEM Mini Pro integrates a streaming hardware engine for live transmission via the ethernet connection. The result is a higher quality live streaming on YouTube, Facebook and Twitch, without drop frames and with much simpler settings. Just select the streaming service and enter the streaming code. On ATEM Software Control, a dedicated menu allows you to recall the useful settings and the streaming status, also displayed on the multiview screen. To find out what the status of the streaming is, just read the data rate, which indicates the speed required for the video format used.
The ATEM Mini Pro model can record streaming data directly on USB flash drives. You will get much longer recordings in H.264 files with AAC audio than the video streamed, to publish it on any website, such as YouTube and Vimeo. When using ATEM Mini Pro with a USB or Blackmagic MultiDock station, uninterrupted recording because it continues automatically from the first drive to the second and so on. On ATEM Software Control it is possible to define the recording settings and select the drives, and the multiview screen indicates the recording status.
The two 3.5mm stereo audio inputs are compatible with table and lapel microphones, allowing the presenter and guest to use one microphone each. ATEM Mini boasts a Fairlight audio mixer that allows you to manage all the HDMI inputs and the two microphone inputs individually.
The four HDMI inputs have their own standard converter, which automatically converts 1080p, 1080i and 720p sources to the video standard of the switcher. The HDMI output is a true Aux output, which allows you to switch precisely between the HDMI inputs and the program. In program / preview switch mode, the HDMI output can also be used for previewing, or full screen multiview with ATEM Mini Pro.
The ATEM Software Control app accesses the functions and includes a series of menus to change settings quickly. In addition to the USB connection, the software can also be connected via ethernet, so that multiple users can use it simultaneously from their workstation. You can also save the switcher configuration as an XML file, and control HyperDeck recorders via ethernet to play back the clips.
The internal multimedia archive saves up to 20 files of broadcast quality RGBA graphics, ideal for titles, opening sequences and logos, or to be inserted in wipe transitions to create more complex effects. ATEM Mini also allows you to capture frames from the output video and add them to the internal archive. The graphics can be inserted through the ATEM Software Control app or by downloading it directly from Photoshop using the included plug-in. The ideal plug-in for graphics that change often, like scoreboards, because it allows you to download it directly into the media player.
For newsletters and virtual sets, use the ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyer primary keyer for chromatic key and a secondary keyer for linear keys. The ideal keyer to insert titles in overlay using graphics with green or blue screen because it isolates the green and makes the background transparent.
In large live multi-camera productions it is important to view all sources on a single screen. ATEM Mini Pro offers a professional multiview function that shows the four video, preview and program inputs on a TV or HDMI monitor. The panes of the rooms are surrounded by tally borders when the room is aired, and each panel displays custom labels and audio levels. A box intended for the media player and displays the selected graphics. The multiview screen shows the status of recording and streaming, and the levels of the Fairlight audio mixer.
ATEM Mini's built-in Fairlight audio mixer allows for live mixing. Thanks to 12 channels, users will be able to mix the audio of all HDMI sources and the two stereo microphone inputs. Each channel boasts high-performance 6-band parametric EQ, compressor, limiter, expander, noise gate and panning.
For broadcast workflow, ATEM Mini allows remote control of cameras. Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and 6K also function as studio cameras, receiving control signals via the HDMI connection to the ATEM Mini. With ATEM Software Control it is therefore possible to manage the color corrector and the camera settings, such as ISO, tint, aperture, focus and zoom, while operators focus on shooting. The control interface available in the traditional CCU layout or DaVinci color correction, giving the user the possibility to access the color corrector integrated in the rooms.
