iPhone 12, Apple plans to postpone them for a few months | Nikkei

Apple would be considering delaying the launch of the new generation of iPhones by a few months, say anonymous internal sources to Nikkei. The management of the Cupertino giant would have already held several meetings to evaluate what to do and understand how to proceed, but at the moment a final decision would not have been made yet.

The main problems would be two – of course both attributable to the ongoing pandemic: one of a more practical nature, the other of an economic / social nature.

  • Providers – Foxconn has said in recent days that it is ready to manage the peak of seasonal production, but, as we said on that occasion, it is only a link in the huge chain of Apple suppliers. Yesterday we were talking about Winstron, who does the same job as Foxconn (assembles smartphones) but in India, which must remain closed for at least 3 weeks; but then there are the companies that produce all the components, which are scattered all over the globe. Just look at the official list (PDF) of main 200 suppliers (only the main ones!) to get an idea of the extent of the matter. OK, there we talk about all Apple, not just the iPhone, which still remains its flagship product.
  • Question – The prolonged quarantine is currently affecting around 3 billion people. It's an unprecedented scenario, so making precise predictions is very difficult, but most experts agree: there will be a great recession, less money will circulate, many businesses will close and many will lose their jobs. Apple therefore wonders how many people will feel in the mood to change mobile phones in a few months. Apparently, the management wants excellent results for its first iPhone with 5G modem: the order for suppliers is to prepare for the production of 100 million units – divided among the four models that should make up the range.

Apple is also in quarantine, with most of its employees forced to work from home. It is likely that the final decision on the matter will be taken when Apple Park returns to fill up – it is assumed by May.
