SerialATA interface from ST Microelectronics.

The Italian ST Microelectronics (third largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world), in collaboration with APT Technologies, has announced the entry into the market of chips for the high-speed SerialATA interface Gen 1 (150 MB / sec.) And Gen 2 (300 MB / sec.) We remind you that SerialATA is about to transform itself into the reference interface in many internal peripherals, such as DVD, hard disk and removable.

Serial Ata was born in 1999 from a team that included Dell, IBM, Intel, Maxtor, Quantum and for the realization of an interface with a reduced number of pins, faster and with a smaller cable that did not prevent as it happens now, the air circulation in PCs (especially in compatibly assembled assemblies).

The defects of the current implementation of the ATA interface, also called Parallel ATA are in the request for a 5 volt signal now too high for the progressive reduction of the internal voltages of the motherboards, the reduced maximum length of the usable cable (18 inches) and its width due to the high number of pins which prevents an easy connection of multiple peripherals and which acts as an obstacle to their ventilation. The last fault is the poor reliability of the data control.

The benefits of Serial ATA are the solutions to the problems presented above: lower number of pins, reduced voltage (500 mV), cable length not limited (the flexible and no longer ribbon cable can reach 1 meter), easy cable laying (also for its small diameter) inside the case, greater data 'robustness', compatibility with previous versions.

Serial ATA 1st generation: data rate of 150 MB / sec.Serial ATA second generation: data rate up to 300 MB / sec.Serial ATA third generation: data rate up to 600 MB / sec.
