Munster: Apple will sell 500,000 iPhones this weekend – logomacitynet1200wide 1

According to Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, Apple will sell 500,000 iPhones over the launch weekend, an expected total that includes both the new iPhone 3GS and the previous iPhone 3G models. This prediction to be compared with the 270 thousand pieces sold in the United States alone for the first iPhone and the massive launch of the iPhone 3G in a greater number of countries that had totaled 1 million smartphones sold.

The downward forecast for the pieces sold was motivated by the analyst during a presentation to customers. According to Munster, the new iPhone 3GS does not offer an attractive novelty / price ratio as happened for iPhone 3G, then offered at 50% of the price compared to the first iPhone. The second detail that will contribute to a less substantial launch for Apple is the lower number of countries in which iPhone 3GS will be immediately available: only 8 nations against 21 for the launch of iPhone 3G.

At the end of the analysis Gene Munster confirms his forecast for a total of 5 million iPhones sold for the current quarter, divided as follows: 3 million iPhones in June, 500 thousand iPhone 3GS and the remaining 2.5 million pieces represented by iPhone 3G.
