iPhone 3GS: new details on processor and memory [Aggiornato]

T-Mobile Netherlands has published a page dedicated to the iPhone family, including the technical specifications of the new iPhone 3GS never officially revealed by Apple: 600MHz processor and 256MB of RAM memory. Despite the reliability of the source, a multitude of rumors are circulating on the Web in the last few hours which, starting from a close look of the firmware of the new iPhone 3GS indicate a processor from time to time with a speed of 620MHz, in other cases finally at 667MHz.

Impossible at the moment to determine what the exact processor frequency is, in any case the confusion about the actual clock frequency seems to derive from the specifications of the CPU itself. The latter, depending on the implementations of the manufacturer, can operate at speeds between 620MHz up to over 700 MHz. The identity of the processor seems to find everyone agrees: the component most credited by the trusted AnandTech a derivative of Samsung S5PC100, a 32KB / 32KB Cortex A8 processor of L1 cache and 256KB of second level L2 cache. As for RAM, we remind you that the current 3G model has 128 MB.

Update: new details on CPU and GPUCompared to the first Samsung processor integrated in iPhone EDGE and iPhone 3G built at 90 nanometers, the new CPU that moves iPhone 3GS built at 65 nanometers. The substantial differences concern the internal architecture: the length of the pipeline for the execution of the operations now longer, 13 stages against the previous 8, while it is now possible to execute two RISC instructions in parallel, previously only one. While the clock speed of the first and iPhone of 412MHz, that of iPhone 3GS of 600MHz: in addition to the substantial improvements in architecture, the new CPU also integrates double the cache memory at all levels.

The improvements are even greater for the graphics engine: for the previous ones and the new iPhone 3GS it is the PowerVR GPU of Imagination Technologies, first in the Lite version, now integrated in a new complete and decidedly more powerful version. According to the estimates of the experts of AnandTech, the new graphic heart of the iPhone 3GS able to offer performance from 3.5 up to 7 times higher than in the past for geometric operations and 25% more for fill rate . In practice, the fundamental CPU + GPU components of the iPhone 3GS are very similar to those used inside the Palm Pre, appreciated for the rapid response times even in the multi-tasking environment. So in conclusion, thanks to multi-tasking, users who use the Palm Pre immediately feel a more snappy and versatile system, capable of keeping several applications open at the same time, which, as we know, is impossible even with the new iPhone OS 3.0.

iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre and the futureThese are two philosophies and two completely different approaches: to express a more in-depth judgment on the iPhone 3GS, perhaps compared with the Palm Pre, obviously an extensive test with the two smartphones is needed. What matters now is to point out that Apple's statements about the fastest iPhone ever and capable of spinning twice the speed compared to the iPhone 3G seem fully supported by hardware specifications. Compared to the Pre, the brute power of the iPhone 3G remains, so to speak, more hidden from the eyes of the user who cannot use it for multi-tasking for example, but this will not represent a problem for long. The developers who abound on the App Store will be able to exploit the computing and graphics power of the iPhone 3GS to the last drop: it will only be for one application at a time, but it will be an experience that we can now only imagine.
