Does AT&T upgrade its 3G networks for the arrival of the new iPhone?

marzo 21, 2020

AT&T today officially announced that the expansion of its 3G networks is underway and that users of the American carrier will already be able to take advantage of the network update from this year, taking advantage of the HSPA protocol, which will allow them to reach a data connection of up to 7.2 Mbit / s.

The 7.2 Mbit / s network is not an extraordinary fact for European customers. In the vast majority of the countries of the Union and also where the GSM standard is used in Asia and Oceania, networks with these performances are the norm, but the fact that to announce the upgrade is AT&T, Apple's privileged partner, has raised the multi-head antennas. Easy to relate the update with the launch of the new iPhone which, according to the latest rumors, very likely that it can be equipped with HSPA technology.

In reality, it has long been suspected that iPhone already has a processor capable of reaching 7.2 Mbit / s; graphs and tables have also been posted on some sites that would demonstrate this thesis, but without an official confirmation from Apple, which is always very smoky in this regard (perhaps to avoid damaging the AT&T image which currently has no network 7.2 Mbps / s), difficult to say something specific. What seems not entirely unlikely that Apple can adopt a 14.4 Mbit / s processor in the new iPhone, the same used by several of its competitors. In this way it would meet both the increase in the performance of the AT&T networks and that planned in Europe for the year; their network with these performances are in fact the main novelty that carriers are preparing to launch in the Old Continent.

Returning to AT&T it is worth noting that Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T, when asked about the collaboration between his company and Apple said he was decidedly satisfied with the result obtained, and very happy with the relationship with Cupertino. To give some numbers, in the last quarter AT&T has obtained 2.1 million new subscribers: 1.9 million are iPhone users.
