Apple presented the new iPad Pro 2020 with LiDAR scanner and Magic Keyboard with trackpad

Apple has announced the iPad Pro 2020, now with chips A12Z Bionic, an element that, according to the Apple, makes iPad Pro "faster and more powerful than most Windows laptops". The new iPad Pro, already orderable on the Apple Store online, includes ultra-wide angle, "professional quality microphones" and a LiDAR scanner that offers advanced depth detection functions, to support even more professional workflows as well as photography and video apps professional level.

The LiDAR scanner, professional cameras and audio, motion sensors, top-level performances, the Liquid Retina display and dedicated apps, are elements that, for the Apple, make the new iPad Pro "the best device in the world for augmented reality (AR ”).

As rumors had reported in the past few days, with iPadOS 13.4, Apple brings support for trackpads to the iPad, offering a new way to interact with your device. Instead of replicating the macOS experience, trackpad support has been reinvented. When the user moves his finger on the trackpad surface, the pointer changes to highlight the interface elements; and with the Multi-Touch gestures on the trackpad it is possible to navigate the entire operating system "quickly and easily" without the user ever having to lift his hand from the surface.

Apple also unveiled the new one Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. With free tilt and adjustable design, backlit keys and trackpad, writing on iPad, according to Apple, has never been so comfortable. The Magic Keyboard will be available in May.

With the introduction of trackpad support in iPadOS, we are making iPad Pro even more powerful and versatile, said Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering. We have reflected a lot on how to integrate the use of a trackpad into a purely touch interface while maintaining the characteristics that customers already know and love. We are excited to be able to present this new way of interacting with iPad to the millions of people who use iPadOS today.

Pro performance with the A12Z Bionic chip

Designed for the most demanding workflows, such as editing 4K videos or designing 3D models, iPad Pro takes another leap forward in terms of performance with the new A12Z Bionic chip. Thanks to the 8-core GPU of the A12Z Bionic chip, improved thermal architecture and optimized performance controllers, iPad Pro guarantees "the highest performance ever" on this type of device. In combination with the 8-core CPU and the Neural Engine, which makes a new generation of apps possible, this chip according to Appe can offer "incredible performances" enclosed in a thin and light design. The battery that lasts up to 10 hours, the fastest Wi-Fi connections, and a Gigabit-class LTE technology 60% faster and with support for even more bands, practically possible to work and create all day.

Professional display

The edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display, in 11 ″ and 12.9 ″ formats, called the "most advanced". "Thanks to the wide P3 color range, photos and videos have a more brilliant, detailed and realistic rendering, and so too do apps and games". ProMotion technology automatically adjusts the display's refresh rate up to 120Hz, "so everything is fluid and responsive". The high brightness display with True Tone and anti-reflective coating offers the best possible vision in any context, "more than any other mobile device".

Professional cameras

iPad Pro has a professional photographic system consisting of a 12MP wide-angle camera for quality photos and 4K video, and a 10MP camera with ultra-wide angle and 2x zoom to achieve a much wider field of view. The addition of a second camera doubles the possibilities in photography and video, allowing you to explore new perspectives and multi-camera approaches – "a revolution for creative professionals".

Professional quality audio and microphones

Now iPad Pro has five professional-quality microphones that, according to Apple, "capture ultra-sharp audio down to the smallest details". also equipped with four speakers that automatically adjust according to the orientation of the device. Professional cameras and audio together with the large display transform iPad Pro into a versatile mobile studio for creative professionals who deal with films, videos, podcasts, content creation and more.

The LiDAR scanner

The LiDAR scanner offers previously unthinkable capabilities for a mobile device. It works indoors as well as outdoors, measuring the distance from surrounding objects up to 5 meters by taking a photon level reading and speed in the order of nanoseconds. The new depth frameworks in iPadOS combine the depth points measured by the LiDAR scanner with the data sent by the two cameras and motion sensors, also taking advantage of the computer vision algorithms on the A12Z Bionic chip to more accurately detect the details of the scene. The tight integration between these elements makes possible a new class of AR experiences on iPad Pro.

All existing ARKit apps can automatically count on the instant positioning of AR objects and on an improved system for scanning movements and inclusion between people and virtual objects. Using the latest ARKit update with a new Scene Geometry API, developers can harness the power in the new LiDAR scanner to explore previously unthinkable scenarios.

The LiDAR scanner improves the Metro app: automatically calculating the height of a person even simpler and faster, and the vertical and lateral guides that appear automatically allow "fast and accurate" measurements. The Metro app now also includes a Ruler view for the most minute measurements, and allows users to save a list of all measurements with related screenshots for future use.

Trackpad support coming to iPadOS

With iPadOS 13.4, it will be for the first time possible to use a trackpad to interact with iPad: this possibility allows you to write more naturally and offers greater precision in selecting text and working with spreadsheets and professional apps. Specifically designed to integrate with the iPad touch interface, the cursor presents itself with a circle that highlights the apps on the Home screen and in the Dock, the interface elements and the text fields, clearly indicating the elements on which the user can click. In addition, you can use simple gestures on the trackpad to switch between apps, open the app switcher or view the Dock, Control Center and apps in Slide Over.

Trackpad support in iPadOS works with existing apps. Scrolling the web pages in Safari or the shots in the Photos library, accurately editing a text in Notes and organizing the messages in Mail on iPad will be even easier and more convenient to Apple. Most third-party apps will work without modification, but developers can take advantage of the new APIs to go even further and create increasingly unique experiences.

Updates arriving in the Apple iWork productivity app suite – Pages, Numbers and Keynote – take full advantage of the trackpad and allow a new way to work with documents on iPad. Other features include new templates in Pages and Keynote, which, and for the first time in iWork, users can add a drop cap to make a paragraph stand out with a large, decorative first letter. Collaboration will become easier thanks to iCloud folder sharing support and the ability to edit shared documents even offline.

Magic Keyboard and other pro accessories

Along with the second generation Apple Pencil and an updated version of the Smart Keyboard Folio, there is also the new Magic Keyboard. It magnetically attaches to the iPad Pro highlighting the Multi-Touch display, and has a free tilt design that allows you to always find the right angle, even when holding the device on your lap. An adjustment system allows you to adjust the viewing angle up to 130 degrees. In its compact and protective design, the Magic Keyboard contains a standard-size backlit keyboard with keys equipped with a scissor mechanism and 1 mm excursion.

The Magic Keyboard has a USB-C port for pass-through charging which allows you to charge the LiPad Pro without occupying the USB-C on the device, which remains free to connect accessories such as disks and external monitors. The trackpad of the Magic Keyboard, with a surface that allows you to click anywhere, completes the iPad touch interface by simplifying navigation and allowing you to work with great precision: in this way, iPad Pro becomes an even more versatile and productive tool.
