Apple is different: transparent solar panels that can be walked on in the Apple Stores

Starting from the one recently completed in San Francisco, for its new stores under construction, Apple will use special transparent and walkable solar panels for the production of electricity. According to a document reported by the electrek website, Apple has decided to commit itself by exploiting panels for its new stores designed by OnyxSolar, a company that develops photovoltaic materials. Apple has long been committed to environmental issues and renewable energy sources: for years it has been using solar energy systems for its structures that allow reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In the annual report on the environment (here in PDF), Apple explains that the main share of CO2 emissions derives from the electricity used throughout the supply chain to process raw materials, make components and assemble products. Last year a program was launched aimed at suppliers all over the world to help them consume less energy, increase the share of clean energy and build plants capable of producing renewable energy.

Apple is building 200 megawatt photovoltaic plants in China, starting with a 170 megawatt solar plant in Inner Mongolia, a solution to partially offset the emissions from factories in its supply chain. Apple is also working with suppliers on the installation of new clean energy plants for a total of 4 gigawatts worldwide, including 2 gigawatts in China alone which will come into operation by 2020. In the next two years Foxconn (one of the most important Apple) installer 400 megawatts of solar systems to power the final assembly line of iPhones at the Zhengzhou plant.

Apple explains that thanks to the 4 gigawatts of clean energy plants it is building worldwide, more than 30 million tons of CO2 emissions will be avoided by 2020, equivalent to shutting down over 6 million cars for a year.

Walkable solar panels have been on the market for some time; with these panels it is possible to create flat surfaces of various sizes, entirely walkable. The new Apple stores are powered 100% by renewable energy, including the energy produced by the photovoltaic panels integrated into the roof of the building. 130 4.5m2 photovoltaic modules with production capacity were used for his new store in Union Square in San Francisco of 487 Wp per unit, capable of generating 90,000 kWh per year.
