The MWC 2020 Mobile Congress in Barcelona was the first major IT event canceled due to fears of Coronavirus, but it could only be the beginning: in the past few hours Facebook has announced the cancellation of F8, the world developer conference, by far one of the most important events of the year for the social media giant.
Facebook F8 was expected to take place on May 5 and 6 at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California, the same location that Apple has been using for its WWDC developer conference in recent years. Although there are still about two months left to the set date, the social network led by Mark Zuckerberg has decided to cancel the event equally without waiting for further developments on the epidemic and possible improvements, as in fact it is being recorded in China where it all started.
The remarkable similarities between Facebook F8 and Apple WWDC 2020, by location, turnout of developers from all over the globe and also by the timing, Apple's event usually takes place in June, raises fears that Cupertino could decide in the same way by canceling the world conference of Apple developers.
The cancellation of Facebook F8 for coronavirus was announced with a post published in the past few hours This was a difficult decision to make – F8 an incredibly important event for Facebook and one of our favorite ways to celebrate all of you from all over the world – but we must give priority to the health and safety of our development partners, employees and everyone who contributes to F8. We explored other ways to keep the F8 part in person, but it was important for us to host an inclusive event and it wasn't fair to have F8 without our international developers in attendance. The alternative social plan provides for the programming of local winds, videos and online streaming presentations.
In the meantime, the Game Developer Conference taking place in San Francisco in March is also suffering from what has already happened at MWC 2020: the organizers for the moment declare that there will be an event, but an increasing number of participating companies are withdrawing. Among these stand out Sony, Electronic Arts, Unity, Facebook, Kojima Productions and lastly also Microsoft.
