Qualcomm presented in its event of February 25 a new viewer with extended reality (XR) reference design based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform, making it the first 5G-enabled XR reference design in the world that offers superior performance, immersiveness and interactivity.
The reference design simplifies complex technologies and allows customers to bring the next generation of premium quality augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) devices to manufacturers and consumers in 2020.
Powered by the Snapdragon XR2 platform, the reference design has twice the CPU and GPU performance, 4 times the video bandwidth, 6 times the resolution and 11 times the AI ??improvement over the current XR platform.
The reference design supports up to seven cameras, equipped with two internal cameras, one for each eye to support eye tracking. It also includes four external cameras, two RGB cameras and two for head detection which can also be used to generate accurate depth maps. This reference design allows partners to assemble different configurations with an additional camera for face and lip tracking or a second monochrome camera for controller monitoring.
For the first time ever, 5G with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G RF-modem system is also managed on an XR viewer to allow OEMs to quickly develop 5R XR devices for global networks.
With native support for 5G mmWave and sub-6 GHz, the reference design has been tested and validated on Ericsson's 5G infrastructure which provides a low latency connection.
Ericsson's 5G platform includes dual mode 5G cores in a distributed cloud and radio networks that meet the needs of low latency applications and support many business models such as private networks and public mobile networks on a specific subnet. With the distributed computing framework that unlocks unlimited XR, device processing can now be increased by computing on Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) via a 5G connection or on a nearby PC using a 60 GHz wireless connection , to reach a new level of immersiveness and experiences never seen before.
In addition to the components already mentioned, the reference design includes an IR emitter for manual tracking and head detection with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).
Other enabled features include 3D audio and voice commands and 2Kx2K dual panel LCD support per eye. The reference design includes partner technologies including Northern Digital Inc.'s (NDI) Atraxa electromagnetic tracking capability which enables accurate low-latency 6DoF control and peripheral device monitoring without visibility restrictions. Compatibility with Tobii's built-in eye tracking includes Tobii Spotlight Technology.
With support for 360 8K video, Snapdragon XR2 offers opportunities for a new generation of fully immersive and highly interactive video content. This resolution eliminates almost all pixelation and improves image quality for stronger sensory experiences. In addition, a frequency of 60 fps enables high-definition rendering of slow-motion replays or movie scenes, allowing viewers to see the detail quadrupled.
Goertek developed the form factor of the reference design (see it in the image) to allow global manufacturers to scale and quickly build AR, VR and MR devices for commercial use.
