How to enable Pixel Visual Core Chip in Pixel 2 devices

With the release of the second update of the Android 8.1 developer preview, Google has enabled the secret imaging chipset on Pixel 2 devices. Pixel Visual Core, the co-processor developed by Google, allows third-party app developers to use the chip functionality to improve capture quality. You can enable this function by following the instructions defined below:

To turn on Pixel Visual Core for your Pixel 2 device, you must first make sure that you have installed the latest Android 8.1 development preview. therefore necessary go to System> About phone in the settings menu and tap the build number 7 times to enable Developer Options on the device.

After enabling the Developer Options, open the same from the Settings page and scroll down to the "debug" section and activate the option "Camera HAL HDR +" to enable Pixel Visual Core functionality. Now you will need to restart your Pixel 2 device to activate the function.

Now, you won't be able to notice any significant difference in the photo captured by the official Pixel 2 camera. This is because the camera app is already using Pixel Visual Core to improve your shots. The main benefit of the feature will come from third party app developers, who are free to use the aforementioned chipset to process their images on the device.

Google has previously stated that app developers can use the "Camera API" to use Pixel Visual Core and process photos using their HDR + technology. The aforementioned chipset would contribute immensely to improving image quality by providing the captured photos with the same treatment that every official camera photo receives.

This Pixel Visual Core chipset will be very useful for social media apps, such as Instagram or Snapchat, which can make the acquisition process smoother and allow users to publish HDR photos without loss of quality. HDR + technology allows you to improve dynamic range and eliminate noise to make subjects in the photo pop. Are you planning to turn on the HAL HDR + camera on your Pixel 2 device?
