Former PA Semi engineer works on the new ARM CPU for iPhone

A former PA Semi engineer, he is now working on a new chip for Cupertino at Apple. The news does not bounce from the usual site dedicated to indiscretions but from the personal site of the same engineer, Wei-han Lien published on LinkedIn. The surprising news both for the content, which would confirm the rumors of an Apple struggling with the desire to create its own semiconductors, and for the way it came to light. A system that certainly is not in line with the extreme secrecy that characterizes every Apple move.

The information appeared on the blog of the New York Times and then taken up by many other sites. The content, as mentioned, confirms what has been happening for some time. The purchase of PA Semi aimed at creating chips (based on ARM) for iPhone. Wei-han Lien makes it clear in his online curriculum on LinkedIn where he reads among his missions: Senior Manager Chip CPU Architect with the task of managing the development team of the ARM processor for iPhone.

The speculations on future Apple products are not counted but reach the climax when it comes to the iPhone and the processors that guarantee its operation. So analysts, observers and technology experts have indulged when Cupertino acquired the PA Semi company specialized in the construction of fast processors and exceptionally parks in consumption. The news of the acquisition was dealt with by Macity in this article while Jobs has always stated that PA Semi technologies would be adopted for iPhone and iPod. In this regard, we refer to two other Macity articles: here and here.

Ultimately the processor of the next future iPhones will not be a completely different architecture from the current one, resulting in a great transition of the mobile platform. It will always be based on the ARM architecture but customized internally by Apple using the technologies and skills of the personnel acquired by PA Semi. According to some analysts, the winning Cupertino choice: in this way hardware, software functions, integration of a greater number of tasks and energy saving (the strong point of PA Semi) can be decided and managed directly by Apple at one's pleasure and respecting the canons security system.

Of course, according to other points of view, in this way Apple will be forced to deal with extremely complex CPU development and design problems that often lead to delays and problems. All this avoidable when Apple turns to external suppliers for the manufacture of the components, vice versa it all falls on itself when the design and development are performed internally.

At the end of this long digression full of prospects and technologies to come, the doubt arises that engineer Lien may soon be forced to change his profile and probably also to look for another job.
