Smartphone market, iPhone XR the most popular in 2019

Apple's iPhone XR was the world's best-selling smartphone in 2019. Research data revealed this Market Model Tracker carried out by Omdia, according to which shipments were 9 million more than the 37.3 million units of the second in the ranking, iPhone 11. For iPhone XR have been estimated 46.3 million units shipped, more than double that of 2018.

In third place we find the first Samsung device, Galaxy A10, which completes the top 5 together with Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A20. iPhone 11 Pro Max was the sixth most popular smartphone in the world with 17.6 million shipments, followed by iPhone 8 with 17.4 million.

Overall, however, Omdia estimates that iPhone shipments fell 4.6% overall in 2019 compared to the previous year. Despite this year-on-year decline, which is attributed to the general rise in prices, Apple continues to occupy the top positions in terms of shipments.

These are the words of Jusy Hong, director of smartphone research and analysis at Omdia:

Apple has consistently held the top and second positions in the global smartphone shipments ranking, positions it has held for over five consecutive years. The constant dominance on this front is all the more remarkable if we consider that Apple's price increases caused an overall drop in iPhone shipments last year.

The Galaxy S10 range consisting of the basic model, the variant and the top S10 Plus did not enter the top 10. In 2018, the Galaxy S9 and its Plus version ranked seventh and eighth respectively. Speaking of eighth place, this year it is occupied by Redmi Note 7 which has reached 16.4 million units shipped.
