Choose the ebook reader | Guide

Choosing the ebook reader to buy becomes more problematic every day, for these we offer our Guide.

choose the ebook reader

Ebook readers are catching on faster and faster and with the development of the market the first problems arise in choosing the ebook reader that best suits our needs. No problem, we will help you with our Guide: how to choose the ebook reader

A technological premise: ebook readers have e-Ink screens (not backlit), a particular type of display that simulates the view of a paper book with all the following ease of reading features.

Guide: how to choose the ebook reader

Screen

So let's get straight to this category, the most widespread technology is Pearl, it offers good definitions despite the page tends to take on a grayish background. The more expensive and advanced models offer an enhanced Pearl that offers whiter whites and less gray blacks (sorry for the pun). If you do not opt for more advanced models, make sure that your ebook reader has the option to adjust the contrast of the screen, this could really facilitate your reading. Screens based on the old Vizplex technology which in 2013 is obsolete should be discarded in advance.

For the screens we can find them with 8 and 16 shades of gray, obviously the models with a greater number of shades available are preferred.

dimensions

The average screen size of an ebook reader is around 6 – 8 inches. The measures on the market are many but these seem to us the best compromise for ease of reading and portability of the device.

Obviously the bigger the screen size the bigger the font size, but don't worry with displays from 6 β€³ upwards you won't have any problem.

Illumination and backlight

The most recent models of ebooks, for example the Kindle Paperwhite, have a sort of display lighting available, which is not the backlight. The technology to illuminate e-Ink screens recently and sometimes presents some technical problems, another "defect", the decidedly higher cost, but it will certainly be worth spending a few euros more to ensure a better reading in less than optimal light conditions.

Physical keys and touchscreen

In this case the really subjective choice is also dependent on your budget.

With the physical keys, navigation takes place in a classic way using arrows and keys, while with the touchscreen the management is more natural thanks to the movements we are used to performing on smartphones and tablets, slowed down by the low refresh rate of the e-Ink screens.

You must therefore evaluate whether a pinch to zoom seems essential to you on an ebook reader or if you just need to use a button to do everything you need.

Memory

Fortunately, ebooks take up very little space in terms of memory, and a reader with 1 GB of memory will allow us to always carry around 2500 books in digital format. There are versions with higher memory cuts, but given the small size of the files in question, a targeted choice around 2GB should allow you to bring all the files, even the heaviest ones like PDFs, with you without ever having space problems. Do not underestimate the possibility of saving data in the cloud, an option offered by many manufacturers.

Files and formats

Many eBook readers read many types of formats, among which the most famous are for books: EPUB, PDF and MOBI; for documents: PDF, for images: JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP and TIFF, for simple texts : TXT, HTML and RTF and for comics: CBZ and CBR) and therefore you will not have any compatibility problems with any file you choose to open, while others use proprietary formats of the manufacturer, among these we find the Amazon Kindle that reads the AZW format of Amazon and does not recognize the .epub format although it is really widespread.

If your ebook not protected by DRM or watermarking the conversion of the file type will be simple and will not give you problems, while in case of protection we will face many problems to transform the format of our ebook, and we should resort to unlocking techniques illegal DRM.

Battery

Forget the problems of the batteries of smartphones and tablets, the batteries of an ebook can last even more than a month if you read about an hour every day. Optimal duration obtained thanks to the low consumption of the screen which consumes energy only when we change the page to be displayed.

Obviously the greater the screen the greater the consumption will be, the latter are also linked to the touchscreen technology which can decrease the total duration of the charge by 30-40% compared to a model based on physical buttons.

Connection

Almost all models are equipped with the classic cable and Wifi connectivity, some also offer the possibility of making 3g connections for free (sponsored by the manufacturer) but limited to authorized sites, such as AMazon or IBS. The 3g module affects the price, in fact 30 to 60 euros will have to be added. In choosing the ebook reader, our advice is to settle for the wifi connection without spending several euros for a castrated 3G.

Price

Unless you are looking for ebooks with advanced specifications such as backlighting, very large dimensions or 3g connections, the average expense is around a large one ranging from 80 to 100 euros, or at lower prices in the case of good offers.
