A million iPhones sold does not mean a million iPhones in the hands of customers, but a million iPhones that have passed from Apple's hands to mobile operators. To correct the figure announced yesterday by Cupertino Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray.

According to Munster, Apple announcing the million iPhones would have used a meaning usually used in its communications that take into account a product such as 'sold' when it ends up in the channels or even destined for them. In practice, the million iPhones would include those actually sold and in customers' pockets, but also those that are in the stores or warehouses of the carriers and in their own Apple Stores (where this type of sales is possible); even Apple would count iPhone cases as 'sales' on the way to its partners.

Taking into account Munster believes that the iPhones actually in circulation and in use are more or less 425 thousand which, although far from the 'mythical' one million pieces, always an important figure. Munster himself believes that in any case the remaining 575 thousand that were still to be sold on Monday are destined to run out soon. Piper Jaffray analyst believes that Apple can easily reach and exceed 4 million by the end of September.

Finally, it should not be forgotten that Apple took 74 days to 'sell' a million iPhone Edge, 24 times the time it took with the launch of the iPhone 3G.
