After reading this list and maybe having two laughs, you will probably start thinking about what passwords you have and maybe you will change them.

Nowadays everything travels on the internet, all our photos, our videos, etc. etc. but certainly much more important are all in our sensitive data such as all the codes of our credit cards and our bank accounts. So, is it worth overstating the importance of our secret passwords?

By now any site we access asks us for a registration and probably, to anyone who has happened, tired or bored, we will insert a trivial password that is easy to remember. All this against our security.

Probably for this reason that at the top position of the list of most used passwords in the world in 2012 we find password. Yes yes, just the word password. A step below the banal 1 2 3 4 5 6 on par with the very complicated sister (so to speak) 12345678. And here is you the ranking of the 25 passwordsmost used on the Internet in 2013:

Hopefully your password isn't actually password.

To increase your safety we give you some advice. A good password must:

  • be composed of uppercase and lowercase letters, perhaps mixed
  • possibly be alphanumeric, therefore also have numbers beyond letters
  • easy to remember so as to avoid having to write it in some sheet or file
  • be at least 7-8 characters long
  • be quick to write to protect us from the voyeurs' looks
  • avoid your name, or the name of a family member
  • avoid the name of your pet, the brand of your car and the license plate
  • absolutely avoid your mobile number
  • avoid putting for example aaa or consisting of only equal letters
  • avoid serial numbers e.g. 123

Having said that, think about your passwords, your security is at stake.
