This guide will come in handy when you want restore your iPhone or iPad to firmware 5.1 or 5.x without necessarily installing iOS 6. By doing a classic restore from iTunes, in fact, you will automatically have the latest iOS 6 installed. Create a folder on your computer desk and name it Pwnage.

Download the latest version of Redsn0w for your operating system ::Windows users(start as administrator) eMac users(if you are using Mountain Lion, start by holding down the CTRL button).

Place the file you just downloaded directly into the Pwnage folder. Extract the contents of the package with a double click.

Download the firmware version you intend to restore:

Also download the firmware corresponding to the one you currently have installed.

Then put everything inside the Pwnage folder.

Start the Redsn0w application (on Mac with OS X Mountain Lion you will have to click on the Redsn0w icon with the right button and choose the Open item from the drop-down menu).

Click on the Extras item in the Redsn0w main menu.

Click Even More from the Extras menu.

Click on Restore from the Even More menu.

Click on IPSW from the Restore menu, select the IPSW (firmware file) that you want to restore from the window that will appear automatically.

Then click on Open to select the firmware to use.

Redsn0w will ask you to connect your device to the computer. Do it and click the Ok button.

If you need to have Redsn0w use another IPSW, the program will ask you to do it. If you are restoring the same version of iOS, Redsn0w will automatically search for the presence of the relative SHSH certificates on Cydia. If the certificates will not be found, you can try using the Remote button or try again by selecting the Local option to search for the certificates locally on your computer .

Redsn0w will set your device in recovery mode. You will be asked to confirm the operation and the program will inform you that your baseband will be updated during the process.

Press Yes to confirm or No to block the operation.

Redsn0w will then proceed with the restoration of the iOS 5 version you have selected.

After a few minutes, Redsn0w will inform you of the restoration of the indicated firmware.

Congratulations! You have thus acquired an iOS 5 version on your A5 or later device!
