Sony is yet another company to withdraw its presence from the Mobile World Conference MWC 2020 in Barcelona, for fears related to the infection of the coronavirus. The company officially announced this in a press release; the giant is thus added to LG, NVIDIA, Ericsson and Amazon. A major blow to the event, considering that Sony is usually one of the biggest attendees. This year, he would probably have unveiled the new Xperia 5 Plus at the fair.
And instead, there will not be, for problems related to health security:
Considering the utmost importance for the safety and well-being of our customers, partners, media and employees, we made the difficult decision to withdraw from the performance and participation in MWC 2020 in Barcelona, Spain
Instead of holding a live press conference during the event, Sony will host a conference on its Xperia YouTube channel. According to rumors, the protagonist will be Xperia 5 Plus, terminal with 6.6-inch OLED screen, with triple rear cameras and a face-time ToF sensor for photos of bokeh portraits. The team may also have in mind to satisfy selfie lovers, with an 8MP camera, while the device could also enjoy stereo speakers and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.
So far, as Engadget also points out, NVIDIA, Amazon, LG and Samsung have also withdrawn from the Spanish event, even if for the moment it seems to be a reduction in presence rather than total cancellation. Recall that the Unpacked event for the presentation of the new Galaxy S20 and the foldable Galaxy Z Flip will take place on Tuesday 11 February: the presentation could also be an opportunity for the South Korean giant to announce its plans for MWC 2020.
GSMA has however decided to proceed as planned and host the MWC Barcelona event from 24 to 27 February 2020. The association a few days ago reported being committed to carefully follow and comply with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), all recommendations on the matter of the Chinese government, all the recommendations of the Spanish health authority and all the recommendations and protocols of law enforcement and health.
