HomePod blows out its second candle on the cake; we recall, in fact, that the speaker with Siri on board made its debut on February 9, 2018 in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. Although the device is two years old, it has never been seen in Italy. Meanwhile, Apple may be thinking of launching a cheaper version.
At launch, HomePod was priced at $ 349, with Apple lowering the price to $ 299 in April last year. The company never disclosed official sales estimates for HomePod, grouping the device under the category "Wearables, Home and Accessories", which set a quarterly record of 10 billion in revenue in the last three months of 2019.
However, considering that part of the growth in Apple's wearable sector has been attributed to Apple Watch and AirPods, it is easy to think that the sales of the smart speaker were not what was hoped for: many unofficial estimates place the global market share of HomePod around 5 % about.
Price the biggest obstacle of HomePod. The two biggest competitors, Amazon Echo and Google Home, offer low-priced models, retailed for less than $ 50. So, this is the reason that leads some analysts to hypothesize the launch of a new cheaper HomePod. Already last year Bloomberg reported that in 2020 Apple could decide to launch a low cost HomePod, and this is precisely because the current model does not seem to have sold as hoped.
Apple, as Macrumors recalls, marketed HomePod as a premium high-end speaker with Siri on board, with the first reviews agreeing on excellent sound quality, finding Siri lackluster for Siri.
In recent years, Apple has updated HomePod in an effort to make it more useful by adding features like Handoff support, multi-user voice detection and ambient sounds.
It remains to be seen if, and when, Apple will release a second generation HomePod. In the meantime, remember, that the device has never seen light in Italy, except through eBay channels after it disappeared from Amazon following the direct sale of Apple products, but is preparing to arrive soon in India.
