Western Digital announced yesterday that it has started production of 100 GB HD capacity. The discs, which have three-plate technology, are the first products of this type to arrive on the market. They have a speed of 7200 RPM and join the 30, 40, 60 and 80 GB models already in production, essentially addressing the desktop video and graphics market, environments in which the size and speed of the disks have a fundamental importance. " In the 7200 RPM disc sector – reads a statement by Mark Geenen, founder of the research company TrendFOCUS – Western Digital, which was a leader in the first quarter. The 7200 RPM discs are now the most popular on the market and the most popular ones compared to the 5400 ”discs. Apple also uses Western Digital discs in its PowerMacs although currently the high-end machines often also have IBM discs. The availability of 100 MB HD could be one of the new features of the G4 of the next MacWorld Expo even if the first specimens are more likely to end up in the additional disks that users connect externally via FireWire. The first 100 GB disks will be on sale within the next month.
