But the Echo line of elegant cylindrical speakers that really show off Alexa's capabilities. Echo is an independent wireless speaker and needs nothing more than an electrical and Wi-Fi connection.
Echo Dot can be self-contained, but shines more when connected to a larger speaker, while the Echo Show on Amazon speakers adds a touchscreen. They all have their differences, but when it comes to installation, they are essentially identical.
1. Download the Amazon Alexa app
available for free foriOSorAndroidand of course forFire OS on Amazon tablets: in fact, the new Fire tablets should probably already have it. (Not supported on first or second generation Kindle Fire.) If you don't like smartphones, there isa web appwho will also manage the installation.
2. Choose a device to configure
An Amazon account is required to use Alexa, but Amazon Prime is not required. Log in to the app. Then click on the hamburger menu () at the top left and select Add device.
Here you can add any number of Alexa supported devices to your account, from smart lights to smart outlets. But we're focused on Echo devices, so tap Amazon Echo; on the next screen, touch the Echo device you want to configure.
3. Enter the setting mode
For the configuration, the bright echo ring will be flashing blue and then orange for the configuration mode. If you don't see orange, hold down the Action button for five seconds. Eventually, Alexa will revive and tell you that "Now in configuration mode".
4. Connect smartphone or PC
You will then be asked to close the Alexa app and open the phone's Wi-Fi settings. Search for an Amazon network (such as "Amazon-L39") and connect to that. Return to the Alexa app to continue the installation.
5. Configure home Wi-Fi
Again in the Alexa app, you will see a list of available Wi-Fi networks; choose your home Wi-Fi. Enter the Wi-Fi password when prompted, if you have one. (You should really enter a Wi-Fi password.) Once all the information has been sent to the device, Alexa will say "Your Echo ready" and the orange lights will go out.
Note, if you have configured an Amazon device at home, you may have already saved the Wi-Fi password. Saving the Wi-Fi password also works on Kindle tablets and ebook readers.
6. Say “Alexa”
Now you can ask your Alexa device for anything you want. You can change the wake-up word from Alexa to Echo, Amazon or Computer via Settings> Device Settings> (Echo)> Wake Word. Or connect Echo to music apps, external speakers and other Echo in the house.
