Garmin launches an iPhone GPS competitor

Garmin also enters the world of mobile phones. The company specialized in satellite positioning systems, has announced its first convergent device that mixes a mobile phone and a GPS last night.

The device, christened Nuvifone, looks like an iPhone competitor. The 3.5-inch screen with virtual keyboard, equipped with an Internet browser and various communication applications, including an email client; there is also the traditional multimedia suite and a Google search tool. Given Garmin's specialization, geo-positioning and GPS navigation are a central part of Garmin's phone functions.

When you enter the car and place the Nuvifone in its holder, the GPS function is activated immediately, each photo taken with the camera is marked with the location where it was taken, a button 'where I am' immediately identifies the position. The interface with Google allows you to have information on the surroundings, from the closest restaurant to the point of interest, classified on the Internet. A service designed by Garmin and always available from the interface, it offers details on the area traffic, nearby fuel costs, local events and news.

The Nuvifone will be sold with the preloaded maps of the USA and Europe. The names of the partners who will distribute the mobile phone are not known that the first of this type to have Gps and Hspda connectivity. The launch scheduled for the second half of 2008.
