Applications for iPhone and iPod touch, from the manufacturer to the consumer

What someone has already called "the silver bullet" (the silver bullet used to kill vampires and wolf men and one of which is enough to destroy the enemy) of Apple proves successful from the beginning, that is, from the cost of access zero program for those who want to experiment with the tool (and will take the trouble to download over two gigs of data); then later it will cost $ 99, a decidedly low cost, if you plan to create programs to be offered for sale or given on the Apple online store. Apple also wins in the development tool, Xcode, which is the same used to build applications for Mac Os X and therefore very well known to current Apple developers. All those who have a Mac (no development for Windows, a good idea to increase the penetration of the platform …) can then experience the functioning of the applications using a simulator.

Once ready, the application is delivered to Apple which puts it for sale on its App Store, in fact an application that will run on version 2.0 of the iPhone and iPod Touch software, as well as on computers (even Windows in this case). Cupertino will keep 30% of the final cost, turning the rest over to the developers. A good deal if you consider that the Apple will take care not to make the band available, but also to manage the entire money transaction, including credit card payment. Apple says it does not intend to do business with the App Store and the confirmation seems to come from the fact that nothing is asked (except for the $ 99 subscription to the iPhone development program) if the free application, good news not only for the developers but also for the customers since many applications sold today at zero cost via the Internet would never have ended up on the iPhone if Apple had asked for money for their delivery.

At that point, once the application has been placed on the App Store, it will be necessary to access the online store (via mobile phone or via Wifi) and buy it to have it installed automatically. The Apple system also provides equally automatic notification of updates, be they functional or security.

Note that applications have access to practically all iPhone hardware. The only limitation, it seems to have understood, is the impossibility of creating Voip applications on a cellular network; the voice over Ip, Jobs explained yesterday, allowed only on Wifi (probably for reasons of bandwidth consumption as well as for facts inherent in the agreements with the network operators). In practical terms, practically everything can be done, including using the iPhone accelerometer (as demonstrated also during the Cupertino event) to create original and functional applications. As for access to the iPhone dock, it has been said that it cannot be exploited entirely, but only for "the functions provided for it by Apple"

As mentioned during the Cupertino event, everything started yesterday evening, with the distribution of the development kit that is free. The beta suite is already available at this address (even if the servers work intermittently due to the excessive load); the actual development program for the iPhone (cost, as mentioned, $ 99) will arrive first for the US and then for all countries. There is also a program for companies that want to create applications for internal use that will pay $ 299. At this stage Apple has opened its kit to all companies that want to try it. Among the current limitations, the fact that if creating iPhone applications substantially possible at all already at this stage, the test program on firmware 2.0 is not open to all; to access this opportunity, which means testing applications in real life, you must have been selected by Apple itself (or be a corporate customer). To access the platform of use you will have to wait for the release of the firmware expected, as mentioned, for June.

The end customers, that is the owners of the phone and the iPod touch, for their part will also have to wait for the release of the 2.0 version of the firmware which will be distributed from the end of June free of charge to all iPhone owners and at a nominal cost for those who have an iPod touch. The fact that those who use the touch is forced to pay does not depend on an Apple choice, Jobs said, but on the fact that the budget takes into account the profit produced by the two devices in a different way.
