WhatsApp is in the lead, but Telegram surprises: the messaging apps that Italians like

WhatsApp users spend on the platform more than 11 hours a month, and while Viber resists, Telegram surprises growing by 150% compared to 2016: the habits of Italians told in a new study

"Not at all easy, always poorly aligned men, you can call them on yesterday's numbers, if they haven't changed them in the night". The same numbers to write to, send photos, videos, gifs, emojis, voice notes. But where? The instant messaging services available are many and find usage data, especially if national, not a simple affair. The analyst Vincenzo Cosenza elaborated those in his possession to make an updated estimate in January 2017.

According to his study, WhatsApp in the lead, used by 22 million Italians, an increase of 19% compared to last year. The app's user base, which has 1.2 billion people per month worldwide, rich and transversal. The average usage of 11 hours and 30 minutes per head, every month (without rival). Among those who use heavy users several times a day, the most crowded segment is the 15-24 year old segment (demographic data emerged from the Blogmeter survey).

Another Facebook home product follows, Messenger, which is used by 15 million Italians, recording a growth of 25% compared to 2016. The age group between 25 and 44 years old uses it most, while the monthly usage time one hour person. Although it has become a platform in its own right for some time, it evidently still calls for a use for faster communications than with other services.

Skype ranks third, with 8 million users, down 16% from the previous twelve months (and always for one hour of use per month) and fourth, drum roll, Telegram. The Russian app affects 3.5 million Italians, and boasts a share of users grown 150% over last year. As with the WhatsApp competitor, the age group of the most active users ranges from 15 to 24 years, while the average time spent per person per month is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Viber (260 million people worldwide) still resists, even if it is down 40% compared to 2016. It works better in the 25-44 age group, which uses it for an hour and 50 minutes on average per month.

The Chinese WeChat used by 280,000 Italians (-25%) for 6 hours a month (probably especially by the Chinese community in Italy, explains Cosenza) and Windows Live Messenger, which records 150,000 people for about 5 minutes.
