How to edit or delete EXIF data from photos

Not everyone knows that by now almost all digital cameras and smartphones on the market, when they take a photo, they store a series of information inside the photo itself.

All of this information is called EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format), which are part of one of the many formats ofMeta informationor metadata contained in the images.

THE EXIF datathey do not only contain the characteristics of the photos (e.g. size, resolution, color depth, etc.) and of the camera with which they are taken with the relative settings, but also sensitive data such as geographic location provided by the sensor GPS satelliteof our smartphone or camera, which returns the exact position where the photo was taken.

If you think it is irrelevant information, reflect on the fact that anyone who has a photo taken by you, at home, on vacation or in the workplace, through these data can know exactly where you live or where you work, even in the case in the photo there is nothing recognizable about these places.

This happens when on our smartphone or on our digital camera it activates the position memorization setting, an option now present in all smartphones, which basically have a GPS chip and which starts to be increasingly present also in digital cameras also cheaper.

THEfiles that contain Exif data are JPEG, TIFF and RIFF just to name a few, while they are not contained in PNG and GIF. Let's take a practical example with a photo taken from my smartphone that I downloaded to my computer.

How to see the information recorded in the photos (Exif data)

  1. Move the mouse over the photo you wantread the metadata
  2. Click with the right mouse button on this file and when opening the box click on "properties"

<img class = "lazy lazy-hidden aligncenter size-full wp-image-24122" data-lazy-type = "image" src = " /come-vedere-le-informazioni-registrate-nelle-foto.png” alt=”how to see the information recorded in the photos” width=”760″ height=”138″ data-lazy-/>

A new box will open containing 4 men, click on ?Details", In this way you can see all the information that has been recorded in the photo, which in my case a very simple JPG file, below you can see an example of a photo.

<img class = "lazy lazy-hidden aligncenter size-full wp-image-24123" data-lazy-type = "image" src = " /Eliminare-le-informazioni-registrate-nelle-foto.jpg” alt=”Delete the information recorded in the photos” width=”793″ height=”358″ data-lazy-/>

Among the many information, we find a very personal data that perhaps not everyone wants to disclose, or the GPS position. To give you a practical example through a photo you can understand where you are on vacation or even where you live or work, call me right-thinking, but in these periods every precaution is always good.

Some of this information in this "Details" screen, clicking on it is editable, but some of these, including the GPS Position, are not. Among the many information, perhaps less personal you can also see the program you used to create the photo or retouch it and then be discovered in case you have modified the photo in addition to the date of creation, modification and last access to the photo.

If you want to make a game, leave in the comments of this article, knowing the position indicated in the photo above, where I was at the moment I took the photo.

We can remove Exif data from a photo alone, by clicking on "Add Images" or wanting a whole photo folderby clicking on "Add from Folder" but this option only available if you have the license key.

Let's try adding a file using "Add Images ", once the file is selected we will see it appear in the white box (as in the image below left), Click on "Next"And we will be asked in" Output Mode "(bottom right image) if once the EXIF ??data has been deleted from the photo the image file will be saved with which of the following options:

  • "Overwrite original"Or overwrites the image file with the same name
  • "Saved cleaned images in this folder"Save the image in another folder you specify, leaving the original file intact in its folder
  • "Add prefix"Save the image file in the same folder by inserting" cleaned_ "at the beginning of the file name (if you want you can change" cleaned_ "with what you prefer)

In the "Options" step we will be asked which of the EXIF metadata you want to delete, in this case I have selected only the position one by strikingEXIF GPS"But if you want you can delete them all by just ticking"All Supported", Click again on"Next"And in the last Options screen you can, by ticking"Obfuscate File Dates"Obfuscate the dates of creation, modification and last access to the file, placing a random one or a specific one indicated by you and ticking the option"If processing fails, move original file to:"Move image files for which the operation failed to a specific folder or trash. <Img class =" lazy lazy-hidden aligncenter size-full wp-image-24139 "data-lazy-type =" image "src ="” alt=”delete exif data from photos” width=”793″ height=”316″ data-lazy-/> Now your privacy is safe, if you try to check the Exif data of the photo as indicated in our paragraph at the beginning of the article "How to see the information recorded in the photos", you can see that the EXIF ??data you have selected has been removed.

Exif Tag Remover acts on many different types of image files includingJPEG or JPG which are the main files that interest us and also: ARW, CR2, CRW, CIFF, CS1, DCP, DNG, EPS, EPSF, ERF, HDP, IND, INDD, INDT, JP2, JPX, JPEG, MEF, MIE, MOS , MPO, MRW, NEF, NRW, ORF, PEF, PS, PSD, PSB, RAF, RAW, RW2, RWL, SR2, SRW, THM, TIFF, FFF, VRD & WDP.

If you are curious to know, not all social networks keep EXIF ??data, for example a photo uploaded to Facebook is deprived of this data, but Facebook itself will know exactly where you are in the photo you uploaded, in fact it will suggest whether to insert the position in the photo taken, on Google Plus the photos retain Exif data relating to the Gps but you can set not to display them.

The problem arises when you send photos via Mail or through messaging services such as Whatsapp, Telegram, Skype or any other similar means, which does not process this data and keep it available.
