The world of Twitter

The world as it appears in Twitter connections. This extraordinary infographic shows the travel paths of all the people on Twitter and the mutual connections. In a single map you can see where the real communities of people are and where the virtual communities are interconnected. Eric Fisher collected all the information with geotags on Twitter, between 17 May and September 2011. Using this information he was able to trace with whom people have talked (tweeted) during this period of time and where people have moved (analyzing changes in posted geotags). The Twitter messages are drawn in purple on the map, the movements of the users are the green lines. The white points are the places connected by both conversations and geotags. The brightness of each line determined by the frequency with which that connection is repeated. The US is very bright on the map because many people talk to each other about Twitter and move frequently, while China (where Twitter is blocked) is a largely black area.
