How to view GPS coordinates on the iPhone

GPS coordinates on the iPhone

Many apps you use on your iPhone are tracking your location to provide services or data based on where you are. While everything happens in the background, all these apps actually use the GPS coordinates to identify your position in the most precise way.

While an average user will never have to deal with GPS coordinates, knowing how to get them and understand them in its meaning can be useful for some – I think for example of people going outdoors or doing geocaching. If you are one of these people or if you just want to learn something new, read on as we explain how to visualize GPS coordinates on the iPhone.

What are GPS coordinates?

GPS coordinates are values ??for determining a geographical point, consisting of latitude and longitude of a position. For all intents and purposes, we will simply say that the latitude coordinate a point relative to the equator, and the longitude a point relative to the meridian of the British Royal Observatory of Greenwich, in the United Kingdom.

How to display the latitude and longitude of a location in Apple Maps

If you need to locate a geographical point with your iPhone, no third-party application is needed. You will be able to view the latitude and longitude data of a location directly with the iOS system apps. You can actually do it using the navigation app Map default on your iPhone. But we will also see how to use third-party apps to discover the values ??of our location or other places.

To view the current GPS coordinates, launch the Maps app, tap the location arrow in the upper right corner of the screen, then tap the blue dot, which represents the location. Drag the box ?upwards on the screenMy location"And you should see the GPS coordinates in the form of Latitude and Longitude. Unfortunately, you can't copy these coordinates from this app, but we'll see below how you can actually copy them using an app other than Maps.

share my location with Maps

As we have seen above, the coordinates refer to the place where you are exactly. But you may need to know the geographical points of a different place from where you are. To view the GPS coordinates of any other place than your location, touch and hold your finger on the screen to add a marker to the desired position, drag upwards on the information panel and you will be presented with the latitude and longitude of the place, in addition to other information.

In addition to Maps, in iOS there is another app pre-installed on your iPhone that you can use to view your coordinates: the app Compass. The negative aspect of this app that you can only see the coordinates of your current position but not of a different place from where you are. The advantage over Maps that you can actually copy the GPS coordinates and paste them into another app to share them with someone.

To view the latitude, longitude and altitude coordinates in the Compass app, simply launch the app and search for data at the bottom of the screen. Click on the coordinates and the function will appear Copy.

From there, you can get directions to that location, or simply get a better understanding of where that place is. The coordinates are very useful for geolocalizing a position to be able to pinpoint an exact point of the earth's crust. As we have seen, there is no need for sophisticated instruments, but only for an iPhone.
