The EU will finance free WiFi for European cities

noviembre 30, 2019

The EU agreed to set aside 120 million euros to finance the provision of free wifi to the Internet by 2020

The European Union institutions have agreed to set aside 120 million euros to finance the provision of free wifi connection to the Internet by 2020, for a catchment area of around 8,000 municipalities belonging to the EU, particularly in areas not covered if not marginally from the Internet signal.

The initiative will be funded by the current EU budget with one total allocation of 1 trillion euros, distributed in a period started in 2014 and which we hope will be concluded by 2020. Cities will have to make a formal request to get the funds.

The three major EU institutions – the Council of EU governments, the European Parliament and the European Commission – have decided that the funds for the initiative to promote free access to Wi-Fi will come from a limited review of the budget EU for seven years.

The political compromise must be followed by a technical agreement that will clarify how to use the resources of the EU budget to finance the new project. The EU budget cannot be increased, but the funds can be partially shifted. New resources could also come from fines and penalties imposed on some companies or thanks to other sources of unique revenues.
