22 must have apps for first-time Mac users

So you've got your hands on a new Mac. So what? The first logical way to populate it with essential applications. But which applications are essential? As a person who uses Mac from Tangerine iBook, I think I know one or two things about Mac apps. Here is the list of Mac apps that must have for Mac users for the first time.

Launcher: Alfred (free)

One of the most useful apps that I have installed on my Mac is a launcher, and Alfred perfect for the first Mac users. Mac comes with its function similar to a launcher called Spotlight, but Alfred as Spotlight on steroid.

Not only will Alfred help you launch anything with a few keystrokes, but it can also define words, perform mathematical calculations, search for local folders and the Internet, find contacts, play iTunes, become a clipboard manager and more. You can also choose one of the themes to change its appearance. If you update Alfred with powerpack, you can create custom themes to make Alfred appear as desired and workflows to reduce repetitive activity.

There are alternative launchers that you can try like Quicksilver (free) e Launchbar (24, 00).

File and folder management

'Finder' a file and folder management feature built into Mac OS X, and does a good job. But for more advanced management of files and folders, you need help from third-party apps. For the Finder alternative, you can use Path Finder (39, 95 USD). In addition to supporting the double pane window to simplify copying and moving files, Path Finder also offers full keyboard navigation, the ability to rename files in batches, compare and synchronize folders and more.

Apart from the alternative to the Finder, you can also automate file management using Hazel . You set the conditions on a folder and, when the conditions are met, Hazel will perform a series of actions. For example, every time you finish downloading a movie, the file will be automatically moved to the Movies folder. We've already discussed Hazel, so please refer to that article if you want to learn more.

Another tool that you can add to your arsenal Unarchiver (free). an app that can help you extract virtually any archive format.

Note Plug and synchronization

What is a computer without a text editor? And today's version of the text editor adds the synchronization twist to the genre. There are quite a few notes to capture and sync apps in the Mac world.

If you just want a solid text editor, try it Text Wrangler (free). But if you want a multiplatform note box, the obvious choice is the gigantic one Evernote (free with upgrade options). Or if you want the lighter options, there are Simplenote (free) and the beautiful letterspace (US $ 9, 99).

Since we're talking about writing tools, why not try Desk PM (US $ 19, 99)? This (Apple's best app of the year for 2014 and 2015) is a minimalist writing app that has a different approach than the old craft. Don't be fooled by the blank canvas, as the editing options will appear above the selected text. This app is also a robust blogging tool that supports WordPress, Medium, Blogger, Tumblr, Evernote and even Facebook.

Video playback and conversion

Many Mac users consume movies on their machines. Among the many video player alternatives, there are two that stand out: VLC is MPlayerX (both free). These two players can play virtually all the media files that are launched on them, support subtitles and lots of other multimedia content. Due to limitations on the Mac App Store, (the latest version of) the apps are not available l.

From time to time, you'll need to convert media files from one format to another. The most famous media converter HandBrake (free). This powerful app has very detailed settings that users can choose, but unfortunately features make it difficult for normal users to use. If you want something simple like drag and drop conversion, maybe you can try Exchanges 2 (US $ 9, 99).

Image editing and manipulation

You don't have to be a professional graphic designer to need an image editor. Even everyday computer users need to modify and manipulate images from time to time. You can do anything with Photoshop, but too big and expensive for everyday users. The lightest (and almost as powerful) alternative Pixelmator (US $ 29, 99).

If you need some screen capture here and there, and a quick image annotation, you can try Evernote's Skitch (free) that quickly scatter the screen with a shortcut to keywords and save the result to your Evernote account. Here are some alternatives to Skitch, if you don't like them.

And to automatically optimize the image size, you can use ImageOptim (free). Just drag and drop the images into the app window and do its magic.

Alternative browsers

Mac OS X Safari a very capable browser. fast, light and does everything a browser does. But having other alternative browsers ready wouldn't hurt them either. Maybe you want the same experience wherever you go, or maybe you just want to open a similar site with different identities.

The best browser alternatives are Chrome is Firefox (both free) with others practically non-existent. In addition to being available for other platforms, these alternative browsers also sync your account to multiple devices and can be expanded using browser extensions.

Windows Management

One of the first things that those who come from the Windows world would notice the first time they use Macs that Mac treats application windows differently than what Windows does. In the Mac environment, windows float on the screen. They do the full screen, but they don't "click".

If you want to recreate that familiar feeling of shooting in Mac, you can use the help of Spectacle (free). The app will allow you to move and resize windows quickly and easily using the shortcut key combination. For example, you can use Command + Option + F to make the window fill the screen, or Command + Option + Right Arrow to put the window on the right half of the screen.

But if you think that Spectacle isn't advanced enough for your window management thirst, you can try divvy (US $ 13, 99).

And more

With literally thousands of apps out there, there must be many apps that are not included in the list. So, if you think there are other apps that should be installed by the first Mac user, please mention them in the comments section below.
