The name does not change, it is not called iPad 3 or iPad Hd, as many had simply nodded the new iPad. Apple proves to be minimalist even in the names and interrupts the run to the progressive number to indicate successive generations of a device. At the bottom of the Mac is not called iMac 11 and even the MacBook Air is called MacBook Air 4. Even the shape remains the same, it increases the weight to make room for a more powerful battery that must feed a display with an impressive resolution. The retina display arrives on the tablet and opens up new visualization possibilities. The resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels, with colors 44% more saturated and 3.1 million pixels, in the same 9.7 ? format. Basically the new iPad has four times the number of pixels of the iPad 2 and a million more pixels than an HD TV. The radical change, in a normal human eye use does not see any pixel, the image perfectly uniform. The iSight camera another element that clearly improved, now boasts a resolution of 5 megapixels and a BSI (backside illumination) sensor that ensures excellent shots also by candlelight. Even the wrestling has been redesigned and now consists of 5 elements. The novelties also concern the intelligence of iSight, and therefore the software, which is now able to recognize faces (up to 10) and to regulate consequently the autofocus and exposure. All the news in terms of image are supported by the new AX5 processor with quad graphics core processors. The autonomy remains the same as the previous model (10 hours) thanks above all to the new and more generous (but also heavier) battery. Connectivity improves, but it will be a benefit currently available in America, with the ultra fast LTE system; Europe will have to wait. Prices and memory cuts unchanged.
The technical innovations all go in one direction to open up new areas of use, new applications, to the post-pc era. One of the goals certainly is reading, replacing the paper, or more simply challenging the e-readers and in particular the Amazon Kindle.
