Zuckerberg wants more local news on Facebook. The CEO of the social network stated that the priority to local news sources is part of an effort to help people confront the communities in which they live.
Facebook has stated that it plans to prioritize posts from local news sources in users' newsfeeds that live in areas where such information sources are present.
Facebook wants to focus on local news
Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, told The Selma Times Journal that the decision to give more importance to local news stems from the considerations made while traveling with his wife in the USA and spoke with people belonging to different communities size. During the trip they also visited the small town newspaper in Alabama.
Zuckerberg said, talking to the newspaper staff, that people told him about want more local news on Facebook. Zuckerberg stated that the priority to local news sources is part of an effort to helping people to confront the communities in which they live.
Local news on Facebook against fake news
"There are several studies that show that people who read local news are more involved in their community and are more likely to achieve civic improvements ", Zuckerberg told the newspaper; "The more you inform yourself about problems in your community, the more motivated you are to get involved and promote change."
The company in Menlo Park, California, said in a press release that identifies local publishers as those clicked by readers in restricted geographical areas.
"If a story comes from a publisher in your area and if you follow the publisher's page or if your friend shares a story about that source, it may appear higher in the news feed", reads the release.
