From the breaking news of the Guardian to the notifications of Pinterest, here are the apps already available for smartwatches
San Francisco – Surprised three months ago, Android Wear was one of the most anticipated topics of this edition of Google I / O. Here at the Moscone West Convention Center were presented the first three smartwatches with the operating system designed by Google: the LG G Watch and the Motorola Moto 360 that we had already seen at the announcement and the Samsung Gear Live, revealed during the keynote and immediately available in pre-order on Google Play Devices along with LG.
Smartwatches won't arrive before 7 July, but during the event we were able to see the first dedicated apps that you can download, in addition – of course – to Maps, notes and weather, which are pre-installed. Everything works with Google Now cards, with the information that will be proposed based on the location or appointments on the calendar.
The application of the British newspaper already supports notifications for Google Glass: news every hour and breaking news on the topics chosen by the user. With the arrival of Android Wear, the same experience can also be replicated on the screen of the smartwatch: you can scroll through each notification to open the story on the smartphone, save it in the list of content to read or share on the connected social networks. I tried it with alerts on the goals of World Cup matches.
With the update of the application for Android, you can receive a notification on the display of the smartphone – and of the smartwatch – whenever we are near a place previously saved in one of our boards or in one of those we follow. An example: the list of places and public places where to see the matches of the World Cup, in Italy or abroad. Just swipe to the right to see the map and once again to activate the navigator.
No big news here: with the Runtastic app for Android Wear you can get all your training data directly on the watch screen, as it already happens on the displays of various fitness bracelets in circulation.
EAT24 is a home delivery service currently limited to the United States: it allows you to order at various partner restaurants, just like Just Eat, which is already available in Italy. The demo during the keynote showed how the smartwatch could be used for order and pay for a pizza literally in 20 seconds: all true. Just open the application on the smartwatch to access your purchase history divided by location, find the order you liked and confirm.
The app of the community of aspiring chefs will allow you to follow step by step a recipe on your smartphone, using voice commands to progress step by step without having to browse, touch, read and dirty something. And, in the event of accidents with the watch on your wrist, remember that Android Wear smartwatches are resistant to water and dust.
The podcastingsi app will be able to control from the smartwatch, to be used as a remote control to scroll through a track or change tracks. It already happens with musical commands: nothing special to get excited about.
