The digital creative director, followed on Instagram, the mind of the collective What Italy is; at Wired reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the famous Californian platform of images
Simone Bramante he began shooting in the late 1990s with a Canon 3000 film, influenced by the appeal of black and white, the love of grain and Ilford movies. a Digital Creative Director and a photographer. Together with Giuseppe Mond has created the collective What Italy Is. Very well known thanks to his presence on Instagram: his account @brahmino.
One of the first Italians to enter in the thanks of the Instagram team who often published his photos in the official account stream and to be among the suggested users. To date, on Instagram it has over 424 thousand followers and you never know what to expect from his photos: dreamlike and with a not inconsiderable narrative force are his trademark, a style difficult to confuse.
Let's start from here, from your desire to tell something. Why did you put "Storytelling, first" in the bio?
""Storytelling, first" the definition (or payoff of an outgoing project) that I gave a year ago to my professional career. Now the term storytelling is a trend, we see it everywhere. The story, be it a brand or an experience, the work I am doing to give consistency to the contents produced, conveyed by certain values ??and by a stylistic choice, giving them life in a timeline.
When did you start publishing on Instagram?
I started three years ago (February 2011). To understand, throw me in, how the photograph would have changed.
And how has photography changed?
That in mobility, shared on social channels, has absorbed a more relevant component of communication, which rewards the message. And creativity.
Your production, on the other hand, how has it changed, how has it evolved? For example, which filters did you use at the beginning?
You know, Instagram also community and filter "Earlybird" that I used for a long time, besides being the one that I preferred aesthetically, it was also a common code of belonging to a group. Now I don't use native filters, postproducts with filters and presets from other apps.
Do you shoot with a smartphone or with a camera?
I bought a smartphone a few years ago just to use it as a camera. I use my smartphone, a digital camera, a film camera and an average 6 × 6 12-frame machine. With each "device" the approach (and the result) is different.
Scrolling through your photos, I feel like saying that the more you go on, the less you photograph reality, creating your own world and poetic, so
I don't think you know? On the contrary, I think I tell the reality more today than a couple of years ago. Now tell the people and projects in which I am involved. The aesthetics, the s. I wanted to make a choice, leaving more room for quality than quantity, especially now that I develop brand stories.
In photo like this or this do you use Photoshop or just "natural effects"?
If for Photoshop you intend to do editing, of course, for me from the simple use of filters to change the inclination of the subject (as in the case taken in example), with all the software and apps necessary for the desired result. Whether Filterstorm or Photoshop, it doesn't matter.
This your first photo or did you delete old ones?
I deleted it, yes Maybe three or four. I found them horrible. Even this does not excite me eh!
The photos you put on Instagram are only published by other parties in different formats?
The material published on Instagram is diffused and therefore visible also on other channels, on the contrary, what is public on Tumblr for example complementary photographic material, produced with other cameras, with the same subjects. Yes, I often produce the same photos with smartphones and SLRs simultaneously. I still need to translate the same imagines in different formats / lenses / depths of field / lights ?.
Something you like and one that you don't like about Instagram and its evolution
I like Instagram. I am biased, because historically (can we say historically?) And humanly I have always had a good relationship with the San Francisco team. The limits of Instagram as a platform are solved by nurturing different channels and apps that I consider suitable for other types of photography that I carry out in parallel.
App for editing from smartphone, which do you use and what advice?
use Snapseed, Photoshop, Filterstorm, VSCO, Faded, Camera +, AvgCamPro, Afterlight.I don't think there is a specific one to recommend, it depends on the need. The one I prefer VSCO Cam.
VSCO Cam not just an app and not the best. It is also a community. I love VSCO because it cultivates the culture of contemporary photography, mobile and not (it exists and is also famous for presets on Adobe LR and AE) through its channels, selecting stories of high quality level.
How do you use this app?
I use VSCO Film for all the photographic material produced by reflex, on LightRoom, then editing their presets. VSCO Cam obviously I use it on mobile, and often, not always, I use presets type G3, P5, T1 editing them always and however with the sharp, varying the shadows, sometimes the contrast, the fade. I modify some features on other apps, which I find better for specific actions.
So this is the best app for editing?
Speaking and sharing with other photographers, points of view on the world of editing, I realize that there is no better app for editing. If you want, the VSCO trend, which is standardizing a visual language, but often crossing editing on various apps, including Snapseed, Filterstorm, Photoshop, Faded and VSCO. Each for specific actions.
The tips always leave the time they find, but try to line up three basic things that maybe you put into practice and that therefore are not absolute truths about how to take and publish photos today at the time of Instagram, Vsco, and photography in movement
My truth today, I repeat, today, I could trivialize it in three passages written here in order of importance.aesthetics: the search for what I consider harmony, grace, beauty.story: to rationalize the experience in a logic, telling it and supporting it with words.Message: publish content with a communication line focused on the values ??I believe in.
Finally, without indicating why: do you tell us one person to follow?
