If you use other operating systems on your PC (a dual boot with Linux or another Windows system) you will surely notice that you cannot access the Windows 10 partitions if the latter has been turned off with the Quick Start feature. Since this is a real hibernation, all the disks and partitions associated with it will be "locked" until the next system startup. If you intend to access the partitions and disks used under Windows 10 with another operating system you just have to disable Quick Start Windows 10.
In this guide I will show you all the methods you can use to disable Windows 10 Quick Start; the PC will be extremely slow to start up (even 10 times slower!), but the partitions will no longer be blocked at shutdown and will be accessible by other operating systems and to perform file recovery in the event of total shutdown of the operating system.
Disable Quick Start Windows 10
From the system settings
The easiest and most immediate method to disable Quick Start Windows 10 use the built-in functionality within the classic Control Panel (not the new Settings menu that you usually use in Windows 10).
To find the item quickly, you just need to open the Control panel looking for it in the Start menu …
… and take you to the menu Hardware and sound to click on the item Change behavior of the power buttons.
A new window will open where you can change the settings of the PC power on and off keys and disable Quick Start Windows 10. Before making any changes, unlock the items protected by the system by clicking on the item indicated by the red arrow in the image below.
Now that all entries are unlocked you can disable Quick Start Windows 10 by removing the check mark from the entry Enable quick start (recommended).
Click below on Save changes to make the changes take effect. Now that you've seen how to disable Quick Start Windows 10, just turn off your PC by clicking the Shut Down button on the Start menu to get Windows 10 off without Quick Start.
To reactivate quick start, just check the item again Enable quick start.
From command prompt
Another procedure to disable Quick Start Windows 10 involves disabling all the hibernation functions on the operating system; with this procedure the item Activate quick start that you saw in the previous section will no longer be available and the PC will start normally without hibernation.
To disable Quick Start Windows 10 launches a command prompt from the Start menu with administrator permissions (right-click on the-> Runas an administrator).
Once opened the command prompt can disable Quick Start Windows 10 and all hibernation features with the following command:
powercfg -h off
Once confirmed the command you will only need to restart to make the changes effective. From now on, at every shutdown, hibernation will no longer be active and the PC will take much longer to start; but on the other hand when you shut down your PC the partitions and system disks used by Windows 10 will no longer be blocked.
You can re-enable hibernation features by typing the following command from a command prompt (again with administrator permissions):
powercfg -h on
