PowerWatch has had a great success: haachieved 939% of its goal in fundraising on Indiegogo earlier this year. After generations of wearable devices with batteries lasting up to 24 hours, the promise of never having to charge the smartwatch again is firmly positioned in the context of too good to be true, yet all true, and now PowerWatch ready for the first shipping1.

How it worksPowerWatch
Energy collection performance of PowerWatch are the result of three major technological advances in current technologies:
– Advanced thermoelectric generators that work more efficiently than the normally available power generators. – More efficient power conversion circuit to power the electronics and charge the internal battery. – Pioneering thermal design to collect the small amount of heat available in the area of a wearable device.
The principle similar to that used by Seiko to power Thermic, its analogue wristwatch produced back in 1998, in that case for the actual use of the watch was minimal, considering that only 500 units were produced. Obviously the world of wearable technology has gone on a lot over the last 20 years, making the type of device a reality, even if, as imaginable, the functions are not exactly at the top.
It is clear that this device is not similar to an Apple Watch: it has a black and white display that counts calories and keeps track of steps and sleep, and all this minus all it does: provide the type of information you get from the more basic fitness trackers, even with a large display.
PowerWatch power supply
Another catch concerns the power supply: there is a replaceable lithium ion battery. The battery should last about six months in standby mode; so you need a bit of charge to keep all the information monitored, when not on your wrist and not synchronized with a phone.
This aspect, of course, raises the question of what exactly is the functionality of a device powered by body heat, which uses a battery. After all, it is possible to get a very long life from a lithium ion battery. Lappeal of a fitness tracker that can be worn all day and all night quite clear, but such battery-powered devices are already widespread.
The next versions of PowerWatch
In later versions, the company plans to add other features, such as a color display, heart rate control and a GPS. For now, however, the device falls almost exclusively within the confines of gadgets, a category that is nevertheless the co-founder of Matrix, Akram Boukai, does not seem to disdain. After all, the PowerWatch is an attempt to showcase the technology used on a large scale.
"Two years ago, when we started making our ugly prototypes, we received a pat on the back from the companies we presented, says Boukai, explaining why the company didn't simply try to sell its proprietary technology to a company like Sony. or Apple rather than undertaking the rather arduous work of launching new hardware. The road is tough, but the company hopes it will bear fruit.
It means, of course, that selling to a larger technology company out of the question, the possibility of granting the technology use license to other companies is out of the question, while, meanwhile, PowerWatch continues to be produced, including the announced new model PowerWatch X. Boukai also stated that they are not thinking of competing with Apple, Samsung or Garmin, as it would be ridiculous.
That being said, Matrix is ??already exploring various possible further uses of the same technology, the most promising of which are Bluetooth headsets. After all, battery life is a major concern for current models and the ear canal is much easier to use to collect the heat needed to feed than the wrist.
For now, however, the company is focusing on the clock, which is now available for purchase for $ 169 on the PowerWatch website.
