IBM buys Ustream, the famous video streaming platform. The negotiations have been going on for a year and now they have reached the definition of the agreement that was confirmed by the same IBM. There is talk of an acquisition of 130 million dollars in cash, more earn-out and various packages to retain the best employees, even if the Economic details of the agreement have not been revealed.

The relationship between IBM and UStream dates back to April 2014, when Ustream was the only video service included in the launch of IBM Cloud services. In the same year, the two companies announced that Ustream technology would be used to add video streaming capabilities to Bluemix, IBM's open cloud development platform. Formal acquisition makes it easier for developers to create video streaming functionality within the IBM collaboration applications. There is also talk of possible synergies with Watson services.

Braxton JarrattUStream will become part of the new Cloud Video Services division led by general manager Braxton Jarratt, the former CEO of Clearleap, another company acquired by IBM last month. Other companies previously incorporated will enter the new business together with Video Cloud services such as Cleversafe (acquired in October 2015) and Aspera (2013).

"We think we now have the most complete video platform – said Jarratt – we have the ability to safely acquire these large files with Aspera, we can store them and distribute them with Cleversafe and Clearleap gives us the ability to manage content and applications to offer new services to customers like HBO (USA TV network). Now, UStream also gives us the opportunity to make a real live-streaming ”.IBM Ustream Ginni Rometty
