To surprise your friends with spectacular videos, using the time-lapse technique with your Android device, you don't need to buy expensive devices and video cameras. To achieve these special shooting effects, you can easily take advantage of even a smartphone or tablet, where the better the photographic sector and the better the final effect will be.
Discover in this guide what is time-lapse and how to apply it on devices with Android operating system.
What is time-lapse
Time-lapse is a photographic technique used also in the cinematographic field, where fewer frames are captured per second than normal (example 6 instead of 24). These frames are then combined into a video, composed of the same number of frames used in the standard. The result will be a video that plays at normal speed and seems to be accelerated. Below is a fantastic example of a time-lapse showing the growth of a plant in 25 days in 3 minutes.
Usually for a normal movie, 24 (PAL) or 30 (NTSC) frames per second are acquired. This value is also called Frame rate. The combination of these frames in succession constitutes the video, which can be even more fluid by increasing the frame rate.
In the case of a time lapse, you can capture, for example, 1 frame per second. Once combined with the subsequent frames, so as to form a video composed of 30 frames per second, we will have a video that will practically be accelerated 30 times, compared to a video that has a value of 30 as the frame rate.
This technique is applied in different areas, for example natural processes that would normally appear very slow to the human eye, such as the movement of the sun, stars in the sky or the movement of clouds, which in this way appear to be speeded up and create fantastic effects.
Standard time-lapse can be achieved by placing a camera or video camera on a tripod. Shooting will be performed on a fixed point. All that remains is to adjust the frame capture frequency via interval meters or through the internal sensor.
In addition to the "physical" technique it is possible to obtain time-lapse also at software level, by mounting a series of frames together and letting a special filter apply the time-lapse effect, thanks to the artificial multiplication of the frames. The effect obtained is very beautiful and the software technique can also be integrated on smartphones, using apps that have a time-lapse filter or an option to upload a series of photos or a video to be transformed into a time-lapse video.
What the Hyper-lapse
There is another technique similar to the timelapse, called "Hyperlapse". The only difference lies in the fact that the camera that takes the video, while it performs the timerlapse, moves in a millimetric way, changing the frame in a slow and regular way, instead of framing a fixed point, as in the timelapse.
There is also another type of Hyperlapse, where instead the point of view remains the same, but it changes the position of the camera, which records frames from different angles. Here is an example:
<img class = "lazy lazy-hidden" data-lazy-type = "iframe" src = "http://www.giardiniblog.it/"alt ="”/>
This technique (Hyperlapse), as you can easily guess, cannot be reproduced through the app, but only through the purchase of a motorized gimbal, which is not too expensive. Here is the best gimbal in circulation, working with both Android and iOS smartphones, with which you can even make perfect shots without any flickering:
In the rest of the guide I will show you the apps that allow you to create a time lapse using the photos and videos you have in the device's internal memory and the apps that apply the time-lapse filter directly during the shoot.
